When Apollo 15 astronaut Jim Irwin assembled a team to search for Noah’s Ark, he wanted an investigator with him.

Bob Cornuke’s background wasn’t in professional archaeology. It was in law enforcement and the collection of evidence for criminal investigations.

That experience helped bring Bob to Turkey with Irwin in 1986 — on an expedition that would become an early chapter in Bob’s own journey of investigating biblical locations.

From investigator to explorer, the approach remained much the same:

Follow the evidence wherever it leads.

In 2013, high in the mountains of Ethiopia, Bob Cornuke was given the opportunity to meet a remarkable monk.

According to local claims and records, the man was 120 years old. He had lived at the mountain monastery since he was 16 and, even after rising to the highest rank among the monks, continued his daily work of baking bread until he lost his sight.

The monks arranged the meeting as a gesture of gratitude for Bob’s help in bringing doctors and medicine to them.

He died about a year after this photograph was taken.

One photograph. One remarkable life. One story from Bob’s years of exploration.

The greatest battles against biblical truth were not always fought with swords.

More often, they were fought by replacing God’s Word with the traditions of men.

History has a way of exposing where we’ve been. Scripture reveals where we ought to go.

May we never become so confident in our traditions that we neglect the One Book that has never failed.

History has a way of asking uncomfortable questions.

What happens when access to God’s Word is controlled?

Tradition explores one of the darkest chapters in church history—not to undermine faith, but to remind us why Scripture must always remain our authority.

This is only one chapter.

Traditions can offer many blessings.

Jesus never condemned tradition itself.

He condemned traditions that replaced the Word of God.

“Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.”
— Matthew 15:6

Throughout history, believers have wrestled with the same question:

When does tradition help us remember God’s truth… and when does it begin to replace it?

As Bob Cornuke explores in his book, Tradition, the answer isn’t found in rejecting every tradition—but in testing every tradition against the Scriptures.

Like the Bereans (Acts 17:11), may we search the Scriptures daily and hold fast to what is true.

After a lifetime spent searching for evidence, locations, and answers…

Bob Cornuke came to a simple conclusion:

The greatest discovery is knowing the great I AM.

In December 2022, Bob Cornuke made a statement that may surprise some people.

After decades spent searching for archaeological evidence connected to the biblical narrative, he said:

“Whether we are right or wrong in these archaeological finds is irrelevant. All these should do is accentuate your faith; they should absolutely not define it.”

That perspective matters.

Because archaeology is not the foundation of our faith.

History can point us toward the truth.
Discoveries can strengthen our confidence.
Evidence can illuminate the biblical record.

But our faith ultimately rests in a person.

Jesus Christ.

The Author and Finisher of our faith.

The One who entered history, died for our sins, rose again, and reconciled us to God.

The greatest discovery is not a location.

It is knowing Him.

The Bible is not a book about religion.

It is the story of reconciliation.

A holy God making a way for us to become His children.
