In the mid-19th century, Mark Twain visited the Holy Land. His general attitude to the ancient land throughout his journey was pretty negative. One exception was the city of Jerusalem, which Twain described in glowing terms.

Today I had the privilege of guiding students on their summer program with in Tel Aviv. Today is also day 650 since the the start of the war on October 7. We finished our visit at Hostages Square, which, unfortunately is still an all too relevant place 650 days later.

This week has been a scary, trying week for Israel. I'm fortunate that I have a bomb shelter in my apartment building and that nobody in my direct circle of friends has been injured or worse. But I'm tired. Like many Israelis. I'm tired of the war, I'm tired of the uncertainty, I'm tired of the missiles being blindly fired at us, I'm tired from worrying about the hostages still stuck in hell-like conditions in Gaza. I'm hoping for better days ahead.

As we celebrate Shavuot this year—whether through all-night Torah study, sharing cheesecake with family, enjoying traditional water fights, or marking the festival of first fruits—remember the 58 hostages who remain in captivity.

Another experience comes to a close! Bus Schnitzteen you were really 'shlam!

Who knew that it only takes 10 days to make a community? I guess a 30-hour flight, 5-hour traffic jam, scaling a cliff, planting a therapeutic garden, kayaking down the Jordan River, experiencing Friday afternoon in Mahane Yehuda Market, sunset at the Western Wall at Shabbat, dancing in the shuk, sleeping in the desert, hiking at sunrise, and chilling at the beach can do that to you.
