For our Jewish siblings we have just come through Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and now enter the eight-day celebration of Sukkot (Booths/Tabernacles). It is difficult in this country for community celebrations and even more difficult in Israel. Let us join in prayer with them, Palestinians, and all suffering health and employment challenges in this difficult time. We are hoping travel to the Holy Land will resume this summer.🙏

I hope all of you are doing well during this challenging time. Please remember to pray for our friends and colleagues in the Holy Land. I look forward to seeing them when I return next spring-summer with five groups.

Dear friends,
In these difficult days, let us remember and contemplate the serenity of the Sea of Galilee and all that happened there.

If you haven't visited Israel lately, you may not have seen the recently excavated Magdala, hometown of Mary Magdalene. It brings now to 7 the number of first-century synagogues we have discovered. (My professor in graduate school said, "There were no synagogues at the time of Jesus; Luke just made all that up!") Jesus would have traveled from Nazareth to Magdala in order to get to Capernaum where he regularly stayed at Peter's house (see Mark 2). This picture shows the "bimah" or table from which he likely read the Torah on Shabbat upon occasion.

An interesting site, not on most tours, is Machaerus, where Herod Antipas had John the Baptist beheaded (Matthew 14:1-12). In modern-day Jordan overlooking the Dead Sea, it is accessible only by the ancient, winding King's Highway. We peered at it from the road on our way down to Petra. The palace excavations can be seen atop the tel.

It is always an exciting event when students peer from Mount Nebo into the Promised Land, with Jericho and the Dead Sea before them. The artwork recalls "Even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up." The church has been recently restored in honor of Pope St. John Paul the Great's visit here in 2000.
