Rose of Sharon
Coastal Lily of the Sharon also known as Rose of Sharon

In Fall it’s hard to find many blossoming flowers in Holy Land. Mostly it’s dry and arid waiting for the first autumn rain to nourish the land.

In Hebrew its called a beach Havatzelet (latin name Pancratium maritimum), sometimes translated as Lily but also "sea daffodil". It blossoms along the plains of Sharon Mediterranean shores (between Tel Aviv and Haifa) in the fall at the most unexpected time of the year after a long dry summer.

It has roots in biblical passages. In the Song of Songs, the beloved is compared to havatazelet hasharon, the Sharon lily, a strong flower that grows in tough conditions, and stands upright.

In Isaiah, the prophet shares an inspiring image of the wilderness “blossoming like a havatzelet” during the time of redemption. Perhaps, the very fact that this flower seems to bloom out of nowhere, at a most unhospitable time of year, gave rise to this prophetical metaphor.
