EstiTours presents
fact for friday!
This week we planted strawberries near Gedera. So here are some until-now-didn’t-know-about facts about Gedera: it’s located at the southern most point of what’s considered central israel, thereby coining the common phrase “from Gedera to Hadera “ (Hadera is the northern most point of the coastal plain) this means, it’s ‘central’ but not soooo central as to be busy and crowded.
It was officially established in 1884, in an area that was erroneously thought to be the site of the biblical Gedera.
4 years passed until they were able to really build permanent homes, and the founding fathers lived in a hole---literally—until they could make better accomodations. It’s still there, for anyone who wants to see it.
When digging at the presumed biblical Gedera, A pottery workshop for the manufacture of Gaza Jars was discovered; they were used to ship wine and other foodstuffs across the Byzantine (4-7 century) world—which gives us an idea of how close to the port ancient Gdera had been, and how intergrated into central Israel the port had been.
Yemenites, and later, Ethiopians, plumped up the population of the modern city, so that every restaurant with a specific cuisine, claims to be the best in country. And they probably are.
Last, it’s known as ‘ir yeladim’, city of children, because of the emphasis put on allocating resources to the little ones. Good call, Gedera!!
