שמח ונרגש תמיד להדריך עבור טיולי ארץ אהבתי מבית החברה להגנת הטבע, ארגון הסביבה הגדול והוותיק בישראל.
עבורי זו תמיד תחושה מרגשת, בבית החברה להגנת הטבע התחלתי לפני 26 שנים, את מסע ההדרכה שלי כמדריך טיולים בבית ספר שדה באר שבע.
היום יצאנו לטיול מרתק אל נחל קינה, מהנחלים היפים והמרשימים במדבר הסמוך לערד. הנחל מספר במידה רבה את סיפורה של דרך ארץ אדום.
ביקרנו בחורבת עוזה, עם תגליות המכתבים הקדומים המעידים על מסחר עשיר בתקופת המקרא ואולי אף על נוכחות אדומית במקום. כל אלה מתחברים לאפשרות הזיהוי של קינה המקראית ולסיפור הדרמטי על שיתוף הפעולה הצבאי של שלושת המלכים, יהורם מלך ישראל, יהושפט מלך יהודה ומלך אדום, במסע המלחמה נגד מישע מלך מואב, כמתואר במלכים ב’, פרק ג’.
לאחר שבוע במדבר אוזלים המים לבהמות, ואז נכנס אלישע הנביא לתמונה, עם סיפור מופלא על שיטפון מדברי ומילוי מקורות המים.
ואכן, זכינו היום ללכת לאורך נחל קינה כשגבי מים מלאים לכל אורכו, בורות מים קדומים שעדיין משמשים את הבדואים, וגמלי מדבר הרועים בגבעות העשב המתחדש.
ולצערי, כמובן אי אפשר בלי העיסוק בסיפור הקשה של הפוספטים.
נזכיר: חברת ICL (כיל) דוחפת לפתיחת מכרה שדה בריר, כאן ממש במרחב היפה של נחל קינה, סמוך לחורבת עוזה ועל דרך אדום. רק השבוע פעלו תושבי ערד ופעילי סביבה בכנסת ישראל, ויחד אנחנו אומרים בקול ברור: לא למכרה בריר.
בעלייה מהנחל נשקף נוף מרהיב של פיתולי הנחל, ובאופק מישור רותם הנאכל על ידי תעשיית הפוספטים.
ניגוד כואב בין יופיו של המדבר לבין תעשיית הכסף.
תודה גדולה לקבוצת מטיילים נהדרת שהשלימה כ־10 ק״מ בנוף מדברי, על ההקשבה, הסבלנות והפתיחות לסיפורם הארוך והמתמשך של מאבקי הסביבה בנגב.
I am always happy and deeply moved to guide for Eretz Ahavati Tours of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, the country’s largest environmental organization.
For me, this is also a personal full circle: this is where I began my path as a guide 26 years ago, at the Be’er Sheva Field School.
Today we explored Nahal Kina, one of the most beautiful and impressive desert streams near Arad, a landscape that tells much of the story of the Edomite Road.
We visited Horvat Uza, with its ancient inscriptions pointing to rich biblical era trade and a possible Edomite presence, and discussed its identification with biblical Kina and the dramatic story from II Kings, Chapter 3: the joint military campaign of the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom against Mesha king of Moab.
After a week in the desert, water runs out, and the prophet Elisha enters the story with the powerful image of a desert flood filling the land with life.
Remarkably, today we walked along a flowing Nahal Kina, with full water pools throughout the channel, ancient cisterns still used by Bedouins, and desert camels grazing on hillsides of renewed grass.
We also addressed the difficult and ongoing story of phosphate mining.
Once again, it must be said clearly: ICL is pushing to open the Sde Barir phosphate mine right here in the heart of this beautiful landscape, near biblical Horvat Uza and along the Edomite Road. Just this week, Arad residents and environmental activists raised their voices in the Israeli Knesset. Together we say: No to the Sde Barir mine.
From above the stream, the contrast is striking, the winding beauty of Nahal Kina versus the scarred horizon of the Rotem Plain, consumed by the phosphate industry.
A painful clash between desert beauty and industrial profit.
Heartfelt thanks to a wonderful group of hikers who completed a 10 km desert walk, and who listened patiently and thoughtfully to the long and ongoing environmental struggles of the Negev.
