Night tour in Ein Kshatot-

Pesach is the holiday of telling our story, the Jewish story from nationhood formed during the exodus until now. Its an extra special occasion to visit the remains of Jewish life from 1500 years ago, in a place where people were telling the story of yetziat Mitzrayim over matza, meat and major just like we do today

So our hike got rained out.

The weather was gorgeous: clear and cool and breezy and our work was done. We piled into the car and headed north. I can't say that I didn't notice that the sky was filling with clouds, but we kept moving towards the trail on the slope of the Hermon.
And then it started to rain.
And it was cold and blustery. When the rain stopped we ran towards this pool, hoping the clouds would lift and we'd see some snow. No luck with that. But we did see wild pears, Orchids and wild Lavender.
This mini hike was enjoyed by all.

Ein Hermon. Waze Ni**od and park about 1 km before entrance to Ni**od. Head through the gate down the steep path towards a bunch of trees. Pool is right beyond the Cedars.

Eleven days with the Eighth grade

I am so grateful to have and the privilege of guiding the Lefell School's eight graders. These young teens came to Israel with their teachers for a full immersion experience. Eating Israeli food, soaking up Israeli vines and chilling on the Tel Aviv Beach were the activities that complimented this classic tour: Dessert hiking, camel riding, Dead Sea, Massada, Jerusalem, City of David, meeting a member of Knesset, vomunteering, Excavating, agriculture, visiting the Golan and Tsfat, spending a day with a local school and drumming on the beach are some of the highlights that will make these memories last a lifetime.
Thank you to the school, the staff, the guides, and for making this smooth trip a joy to guide.

Bental Reservoir
After 10 days of unreasonably hot temperatures, we are plummeting back into winter weather, hopefully with lots of rain. Its a perfect time to dip in the hotel water pouring into the Bental Reservoir. Just know, it's freezing 🥶 when you get out. And there isn't always hot water. While there, take in the views from Mount Bental, which is once again open to the public.

Sunset at the Paliomagnetsim point

Not everyone can apprecciate this site, a point where a classic compass points south. A window into a time and place when the earth's magnetic field was reversed? A stone struck by lightening?

Honesty, I dont find this too interesting... but the light at sunset by the almond tree? Priceless

Another perfect hike: Dor Habonim linear or circular trail. I usually think about hiking in the desert this time of year, when daytime temperatures are comfortable. Or my favorite Northern trails which are lush and green and full of flowers. When this group from Eilat asked for this trail I was puzzled, as surely they get plenty of sea views. But I forgot what makes this particular nature reserve so unique: lagoons and limestone ridges, ancient quarries and heaps of shells to explore, and the unique blossoms of this particular habitat. I've never been here before in tulip season and it's a sight to behold.

Note: circular trail begins in dor habonim beach, which has an entrance fee and closes at 4 pm. Head south on the red trail and return north on green trail, 2.5 km.

Agmon Hula - sunset tour in a hidden wagon

In some seasons we go to visit the small lake in the heart of the hula valley to enjoy the flora and fauna of the ecosystem that once dominated this valley. Its the perfect place to view cranes, pelicans, flamingos, ibises and herons that stop here to rest overnight or sometimes for a few months along the world's busiest migrating route.
But in Februray, it's all about the cranes.

Tu Bshvat
The Jewish holiday celebrating trees, growth and revival. The beautiful flowers of the almond tree are the symbol of external beauty that reflects deep processes occurring on the inside.
Wishing you a happy holiday, strength, hope and growth.

Olive Harvest and tastings! I had the privilege of joining a group of guides during the harvest season in tasting olive oil in the Lower Galilee and visiting several presses. Vising the ancient groves really makes me feel connected to this land where olives have been harvested for thousands of years. And to spend a day drinking shots of olive oil? An experience I'd love to repeat with guests. Come see the beautiful Galilee!

More Golan Magic! This one is in the southern Golan at the spectacular Peace Vista. This end of the Golan hasn't had enough rain to turn it green yet, but the lighting and view mean it's always beautiful. If you are here on a warmer day, take the metal stairs down to the marked trail which will lead you to a natural spring with the bluest water and tbe finest view.

Carmel Mountain
Neder to Galim Gorge

We are between rains and the flowers aren't quiet blooming yet, so this trail is really hitting the spot. Circular trail begins at Haifa University and takes us into the Neder Gorge. Actually the highlight of this trail is probably the Kedem spring, which we totally skipped (too cold!). Our highlights are mushrooms, white rocks filled with water from the last rain, views of the Carmel forest and the rungs we need to climb just before the trail's end.

MY 51-94
I wasn't sure that I wanted to spend all of Chanuka guiding Birthright, but when I heard that it was an all girls trio, I couldn't let the opportunity go. We spent 10 days exploring Israel, often in the pouring rain. With 38 Americans, 6 Israelis, 5 staff members, we had so many emotional ups and downs. We also saw some Houthi action, about 15 candle lightings, suffaniyot in many different cities, lots of halachic questions, tears, laughter, dancing and lots of inspiration. Thank you to this beautiful group for a wonderful trip and an unforgettable Chanuka. I look forward to hearing about your smachot and seeing you in Israel again soon.

The Golan Synagogue Projecct.

I have to say: this year there were no blood, sweat, tears. There was curiosity, enthusiasm, energy, cooperation and joy. Seven schools from the Golan regional council siezed the opportunity to learn about our own roots in this setting, as they literally explored our earth and our ancient Batei Knesset.

It was my absolute pleasure to meet the students, their teachers and principals and together with the outstanding archeologists of the IAA, while coordinating this project. Beyond that, it was truly a privilege.

Its nice to see our project recieving some national attention from the Israel Antiquities Authority.

I think we found it!
Mission accomplished. Maybe.
We have been searching the yehudiya village for the site of a talmudic period synagogue. The architectural elements are everywhere. Historical references indicate its here. 19th century explorers attest to its likeliness.
So why have archeologists hypothesized as to where it might be without as much as digging a pit? I don't know.

I do know that on day three in area B, after a morning in which we determined that we are in the wrong place and sent half of the force to start on area C, we hit this column. Standing straight and seemingly in situ, the column is sitting on two tiles of a stone floor. Very typical of Golan synagogues.
Stay tuned...

Carrying on isn't easy.
But a chance to excavate in the Yehudiya village was an opportunity not to be missed. We are looking for a Beit Kneaset that undoubtedly stood there 1500 years ago and probably gave this village it's Jewish name. It may, or may not, be under this house.
