YAD VASHEM:
Een korte en persoonlijke beschrijving van een van onze Joodse gidsen in Israël.

Yad Vashem is een 'monument' gewijd door de Joodse Staat Israël aan de zes miljoen Joden die in de tweede wereldoorlog zijn vermoord. Het museum bestaat uit twee delen: de monumenten buiten en de tentoonstellingen binnen waarbij je stapsgewijs door zowel verschillende periodes als onderwerpen geleid wordt.

Jaarlijks ga ik met vele groepen naar Yad Vashem en elke keer weer is het voor mij, als Jodin, moeilijk om te gidsen in het Gedachtenismonument van de Holocaust. Waarom? Het feit dat er zes miljoen Joden omgekomen zijn tijdens deze oorlog. Zes miljoen is een getal dat je, hoe je het ook probeert, niet kunt bevatten. Wanneer ik als gids mijn verhaal vertel, probeer ik altijd het volgende over te brengen: denk niet aan het getal zes miljoen, maar denk aan een dochter, een zoon, een echtgenote, een vader etc. Die allen een leven hun hobby’s en interesses, kortom een leven hadden net als u en ik. Zes miljoen levens van onschuldige mensen, ook kinderen, die verwoest zijn.

Gidsen is voor mij –als Jodin- dan ook heel moeilijk in Yad Vashem. Want hoewel ik zelf van de derde generatie ben, leef ik op 44 jarige leeftijd alsof ik van de tweede generatie ben.

Wanneer ik mijn kinderen van school haal en 800 Joodse kinderen in een Joods land om mij heen zie hollen en voetballen op het speelplein, denk ik iedere keer weer: Ha!!! Hi**er!!! Zie je dat? We zijn er nog, we leven! Als ik zelf 30 jaar eerder was geboren , was ook ik, net als mijn grootouders, ooms en tantes afgevoerd naar, Westerbork, Ravensbrück, Theresiënstadt of Bergen Belsen, net zoals zij.

Dus gidsen in Yad Vashem voor mij is het vertellen van mijn verhaal, het verhaal van mijn familie en dit te delen met de mensen om mij heen in Yad Vashem. Met de mensen van de groep.

Voor mij is het 'hoogtepunt' van Yad Vashem iedere keer weer het uitzichtpunt bij de uitgang van het museum. Na het binnenmuseum kom je uit op een soort terras met uitzicht op Jeruzalem. Als symbool. Uitzicht op een volgebouwd Jeruzalem met flatgebouwen en huizen waar mensen wonen en werken en met ziekenhuizen waar iedere dag Joodse kinderen worden geboren, waar het leven door gaat.

Maar denk je in: zes miljoen is niet zes miljoen. Zes miljoen is zes miljoen mensen, én hun kinderen die nooit geboren zijn, en hun kleinkinderen die nooit geboren zijn, hun achterkleinkinderen en al hun volgende generaties die nooit zullen leven. En daarom vind ik het uitzicht bij Yad Vashem zo mooi, uitkijkend op Jeruzalem, dat nog altijd bruist; mijn land, mijn toekomst en de toekomst voor allen na mij.

Yad Vashem, een absolute must in een reis naar Israël!
