The story you never heard about the Little Mermaid, right before Shabbat.

Everyone knows she sits at Langelinie harbor in Copenhagen, gazing out at the water. Most visitors never learn what happened at that same pier on October 2, 1943, when 198 Jews were brought there and put on a ship bound for Theresienstadt. It was one of only two deportation transports to leave Denmark that October. Most Danish Jews were never caught. Neighbors hid them. Fishermen carried them across the sound to Sweden by the thousands, one of the largest rescues of Jews anywhere in occupied Europe.

The untold stories are a crucial part of the learning on a J² journey.

The world is vast, layered, and full of perspective.

To truly experience a place is to meet the people who shape it: the faces, the stories, the quiet moments that stay with you long after the journey ends.

This is one of those moments, with an artist at the Sandrouni Workshop in Jerusalem's Old City, known for its hand-painted Armenian ceramics, a tradition carried from one generation to the next, brushstroke by brushstroke.

The Alhambra Palace is one of the most visited sites in the world. Its Jewish story is often overlooked.

On a J² journey, it takes center stage. It is a story of a Jewish scholar who commanded armies. Of a Golden Age of poetry, philosophy, and learning. Of massacre and persecution. And of the Alhambra Decree, signed within these very walls, that brought centuries of Jewish life in Spain to an end.

That history deserves a place in the story too.

Shabbat Shalom from the Temple of Hephaestus, watching over the Ancient Agora since 449 BCE.

Most visitors don’t know that a Jewish community once prayed on this same ground. Archaeologists found the proof nearby: a fragment of marble carved with a menorah and a lulav, the trace of a synagogue that stood here in antiquity.

It’s a small detail, easy to miss. But it says something larger: Jewish life has always found its way into the center of things, even in the city that gave the world philosophy and democracy.

That’s the layer a J² journey surfaces.
