The Two most famous (out of 330 million !!) god and goddesses in India are Lord Ganesha and Lord Krishna and the birthdays of both these gods are celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm in the country.
Today is Ganesh Chaturthi, the birth anniversary of LORD GANESHA, according to hindu mythology lord Ganesha was born on this auspicious day, the legend is once Lord Shiva had beheaded his son Ganesha in anger, later as penance he attached the head of an elephant baby was to his torso and in this way Lord Ganesha found his life again. This day itself is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi, It is believed that on this day Lord Ganesha descends to earth to bless his devotees and whoever worships him during this time is sure to get success in his endeavors. Although the festival is celebrated all across the country but it is the biggest festival in the state of Maharashtra, The festival begins with the installation of Ganesha idols in the house and temple on the day of Chaturthi. Devotees bring Ganesha idols to their homes with great fanfare by playing drums and dance their way home, for the next 10 days, people worship Lord Ganesha in their homes and temples, singing songs, dancing, chanting mantras, performing aarti and offering modaks (sweets) to Ganesha , On on the 11th day, with Ganesh Visarjan (immersion of the clay idol in river/sea), Lord Ganesha is sent off with prayers for his arrival the next year, it’s a festival full of processions with loud music and dancing on the streets, it’s a Carnival atmosphere all around !
