Their kaadu- the red sand desert formed in TamilNadu is a hidden gem. One needs to see to believe it. On our trip to rural Tamilnadu this was one of our highlights and I can't get enough of it.
The Govt has started plantation on the soil, and we could spot palms, Neena and even acacia from Australia. I wonder what the result would be after a few years?

10.00 AM in Alwarthirunagari, Tamil Nadu. Quiet, peace ,serene time. Isn't it nice to be in this peaceful village. The kolams fascinate me. The thought behind it where the small insects are thought of when spreading the ric flour. How each tradition gets transformed in to a piece of art! A fascinating world opens for us on our small group journeys!

On my first trip to Ladakh, visiting the Changthang region and camping with them was the highlight of Ladakh. The vast plateau, the hills around, was fascinating. As the sheep came down from the days grazing to the nomad village with sun shimmering on their backs created a golden hue, it was magical. I was in a fairy land, but the reality is different. It is a tough life but women were happy and smiling weaving on their backs strap looms, the men weave the yak wool for their tents called Rebo and women weave the sheep wool for their carpets. They battle very cold winds! And they rear the pashmina goats the wool which is so cherished and sought after.
With time as things change, some of them have settled in permanent homes in a place called Kharnak. Children can go to school, there is more certainty to life here. I am sure they miss the freedom to roam in nature and be with the majestic hills. They get their wool from some of them who are still enjoying the earlier lives at high altitude. It's always tough to choose, right?
This time I had the opportunity to meet these tough, skilled women who are continuing with the tradition. And for the first time I tried sitting on a back strapped loom to weave! Oh my it's a job of patience ! One goes rows by row taking the wool choosing the right colours and cutting each row with a cutter. I could barely finish a line!
along with is weaving some magic, so all the more reason to visit them! My last day at Ladkah became a busy eventful day!

There is a charm to be in the midst of nature. A hard life indeed when you grow your own grains and vegetables and even grind the flour!
A watermill stands for these 4 housed villages, one can adjust the flow of the water and the space between the two stones to get the desired texture of the flour.
The lady of the house proudly displayed her water mill and the farm! Later to be fed with home cooked khambhir and curds. What a treat!

Two days in the wonderful company and the hospitality of at .ladakh were a treat and not to be missed. Leaving Ladakh has always been with a question when next?
Is it the landscape, the nature, the towering mountains or the people? Hard to say. But the land lures me again and again.
Dolkhar is built with a lot of thought, seeped in sustainable practices, taking the practices of the olden times from the craftsmen and artisans. It is subtle and minimalistic with elan! The ceiling is from poplar and willow their local trees and walls from clay. The secret to keeping temperature right in the extreme weather.
The villas give a sense of home. Outside is a small garden in bloom where one takes their morning coffee. Tsas is the award winning restaurant which has curated meals. The ingredients are local, all sources from the region.
The only agenda was to relax and meet friends! .jiwan,

As we headed towards Leh, we had a night stop at Nimmu house, a hundred year old family home now converted to a homestay! A lovely spa and yoga room keeps one fit and relaxed. The family kitchen has its clay stove intact with 5 stoves inbuilt in it. What a beauty these stoves are. Indrani the gracious lady behind this home greets you and looks after your stay whilst you are there. Here she shows us the underground storage that is there in the home. There are six spaces like this where grains were stored in earlier times!
Meals are under the apricot and apple trees which are in abundance and a stream passes by where you dip your feet once back from a long trek.
A bliss in the mountains!

Two days of happy quiet stay we were on the way to Padum. His Holiness Dalai Lama had the teaching day and we were hoping to catch it. Are we the ones who plan our days? We couldn't reach on time but had the opportunity to see Faith, Awe and Wonder in the eyes of people who gathered. Dressed in all their finery Ladies and Men in their traditional dress was a treat. Children so young tagging along too. After a visit to the rock carved Maitrey Buddha and monasteries around got us to another jewel, the Zang ser Sarai. Tucked away from busy Padum, bang on the river a quiet spot awaits us. The owner Rigzing is a kind soul and wears numerous hats. A day is short to sense the beauty around. If one is looking for quiet time with oneself this is another place to be in.
The majestic mountains were all dressed in beauty showcasing their various colours. Towering over us as we drive on the narrow winding roads!
