The building in the background is called 'zawlbuk'. Zawlbuk was a bachelors' dormitory which would be found in all the Mizo villages in the earlier times. It was a very important institution in Mizo society. A Mizo Village has been set up in Falkawn near Aizawl which has re-created the typical Mizo village. As part of Paryatan Parv celebrations, the Tourism Department Mizoram took the little children of Govt Comprehensive Model School to the village.

Champhai is known as the "Rice Bowl of Mizoram". It lies in Eastern Mizoram about 23 Km from Indo Myanmar border, just about an hour's drive to Zokhawthar the last Indian town before crossing to Myanmar. Here is a photo of the ripening paddy in Champhai.

In the remote village of Vangchhia, Mizoram along the Indo-Myanmar border, there are many meghaliths which the Archeological Survey of India are still not sure who put them and when. Strange inscriptions and images are carved out on them. In this particular site there are more than 250 such meghaliths.

Vanzema and his friends were fishing on the Mat, a river in South Mizoram. One of his friends fell into the river and Vanzema dived in to save him. As he was searching for his friend in the murky waters, he suddenly found himself on dry land. An old man was slicing bamboo strips nearby. When the old man saw Vanzema, he asked him why he had come to his land and threatened Vanzema that he would chop of his head if he dared to come again. Frightened out of his wits, Vanzema swam as fast as he could to the surface and his friends pulled him on to the boat. When he related what he has seen and what the old man had said, his friends laughed at him and did not believe him. Vanzema became very hurt and angry that he was more or less being accused of lying. He felt that his prestige as a honest truth speaking man was hurt.

"Tie a rope around my waist. I will jump into the river again. You can pull up my headless body and know that I was speaking the truth", Vanzema said. So his friends tied a rope around Vanzema's waist and he jumped into the river again. After sometime, the rope started to move vigorously. The men on the boat pulled at the rope and there was Vanzema with the rope still tied around his waist but without his head.

This is the story of Vanzema Tlawm La (the act of Vanzema to uphold his honour) and the pool is known as Vanzema Li.

Thaltlang is the last village before reaching Far Pak on the Phawngpui Tlang (Blue Mountain). You can take the 7 km hike to Far Pak, a beautiful plateau before climbing to the peak which is another 7 km. A trekker's delight.
