Boats vary from 1 bedroom to 5 bedroom. Spice Routes is a throwback to the spicy scent of a vintage era when large barge-like boats laden with spices and coir plied through the canals of Alleppey. They have been meticulously converted into super luxury houseboats for pleasure trips through backwaters. We have an exclusive boarding and drop off point at Akkarakalam Memoirs, our 150 years old our heritage home located in a 7 acre farm, away from the tourist rush of Alleppey. We are in the heart of the backwaters with access to paddy fields and villages, for a true countryside experience. Pick up & drop at Akkarakalam Memoirs and Kumarakom is an additional Rs.1500/. For all the guests who are boarding and drop at Akkarakalam Jetty, we provide complimentary village walk, a paddy field walk, fishing Rods and country boats canal cruise for a closer look at local life. Our honeymoon guests are offered a complimentary candle light dinner. Dining
The food is prepared on the boat by our chef. Meals are prepared with the freshest ingredients from our personal kitchen garden and farm. Lobsters, fish and mussel are bought/ fished from the local fishermen. Expect authentic flavours & warm hospitality. Our dining room is also covered with glass walls, so there is air conditioning and the view of the backwaters at all times.

Our Story

The Spice Route Story

When we started the Spice Routes journey with only a single houseboat in 2008, the backwaters of Kerala were in the thick of flourishing business. The kettuvalams stole the show for travellers who had not seen anything like this before – large architectural wonders on the slim, palm flanked canals of the region. The houseboats were a true emblem of Alleppey with a traditional style thatched roof. On the sides of the canals, travellers could gaze at life passing by in local homes.

At that point of time, we could have done two things. Join the rest of the operators and offer the same experience, or notch it up by adding an element of luxury to the blissful experience. From years of having lived here and interacted with travellers, we realised that there was a need to rejuvenate in ultimate luxury. Some of the travellers found the tropical weather difficult to handle. Months of hard work resulted in the air-conditioned rooms, refurbishing the interiors of a houseboat to look like a hotel room and even training our staff with the professional flair of the hotel industry. This also meant, keeping an ideal balance of their local personality but at the same time understanding the needs of an international traveller.

In tune with all things ‘Alleppey’

This by no means meant that we do not expose the traveller to the local life and only cocoon them in comfort. We worked with some of the local homes and curated day trips and interactions for the travellers, so they can see Alleppey with a local eye. We have worked with these families for over a decade now and know them like our own. From the oldest lady of the house to the youngest child is happy to welcome guests in their home and show them activities that are fascinating for the travel but a ‘way of life’ for them. De-clamming shells, making coconut chutney or just sharing a cup of tea in their homes is a great experience for the traveller. We try and engage with others from the community as well - the local toddy tapper, the fisherman who dives without gear to catch fish and emerge from the water with his catch and the local boat owners who take our guests on canal rides, are all part of the Spice Route family.

Responsible Tourism

Like any other ecologically sensitive region, Alleppey too needs an eye on conservation and sustainable practices in tourism. Even though our offering is luxury, we keep sustainability at the core of the experience. You’ll find only glass bottles with filtered (date-stamped) water on the houseboats as well as the local canoes when you’re cruising in the backwaters. Plastic is completely banned and we urge guests to take any polybag or plastic bottle back with them should they happen to get it while checking in. We have set up a large internal aerobin so that all biodegradable waste from the houseboats can be converted into compost. Additionally, the plastic bags used to line the dustbins on the boats are also 100 % bio-degradable. All our staff is from nearby villages and we ensure that the food that we source is from in and around Alleppey, including our own 7 acre farm.
