Katarmal Sun Temple
There are a large number of temples dedicated to the sun all over the word and some of them are quite old as sun worship was common among many civilization. More than ten of these temples are in India. Katarmal sun temple facing east is situated nearly 15-20 Kms. from Almora town. It is situated on a remote hill top where one can also reach by hiking a steep path of nearly 2Kms. from Kosi village, or take the long motorable road and short walk. This partially finished temple complex have around forty small temples also is dated 9th-10th century and was built by Katarmalla a Katyuri king. Some of the small shrines may have been built latter on. These stone temples having metallic hooks do reflect the architecture of medieval kings of Katyuri dynasty. Its similarity to Jageswar temples, which is also built along the same period is noteworthy. The complex though unique look like someone was in a great hurry to build it but left for unexplained reasons. No onsite information is available and on enquiring from locals one can gather some stories associated with it. It is a pity that intricately designed doors, panels and some deities were removed for safe keeping and thereby reducing its charm to a great extent. The entry is free and it is better to visit it before sunset. Keep 2-3 hrs. for completing the task. A desolate place having a serene charming view will atleast make up for some disappointment. Lacks proper sanitation. But do not expect much to minimize disappointment. No wonder this site is not among the regular/popular tourist circuit..
