The Paradesi Synagogue, also known as the Cochin Jewish Synagogue, is located in Jew Town, Mattancherry, Kochi, Kerala. It is one of the most important symbols of Jewish heritage in India.
Ancient Jewish Presence in Kerala
Jews are believed to have arrived on the Malabar Coast of Kerala nearly 2,000 years ago, mainly as traders. They lived peacefully under local rulers and became an integral part of Kerala’s trading society.
Establishment of the Synagogue (1568 AD)
The Paradesi Synagogue was built in 1568 AD by the Paradesi Jews—a group of Jews who migrated to Kochi from Spain, Portugal, the Middle East, and Europe after facing persecution during the Spanish Inquisition.
The synagogue was constructed adjacent to the palace of the Cochin Maharaja, who granted land and protection to the Jewish community.
Destruction and Reconstruction
• In 1662, the synagogue was damaged during the Portuguese invasion of Kochi.
• After the Dutch defeated the Portuguese, the synagogue was rebuilt in 1664, leading to its present structure.
