The Kailasa Temple in Ellora is a massive temple carved directly into a cliff face. This marvel was built in the 8th Century and is usually attributed to the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I. But given its scale, construction could have spanned multiple kings' lifetimes. It is believed that sculptors excavated vertically - they started chiseling from the top and went downwards.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, but also contains Vaishnavite sculptures, as well as carvings depicting the Mahabharata and the Ramayana - legends of Vishnu's avatars.
