The World Map at Lake Klejtrup

It took more than 25 years to build this incredible walkable world map.

You’d need around 11 years to walk around the globe – if you can walk on water. But a world map in Denmark makes the feat possible in a few minutes. Verdenskortet, or world map, is a walkable map, made of soil and stone, built on top of a pond. It took Søren Poulsen more than two decades to complete this extraordinary project, and it was worth the wait.

Poulsen, who was born in 1888 in Denmark, realized a stone on his land was shaped similar to the Jutland Peninsula. That stone launched the idea to create a world map, and Poulsen started the project in 1944. He continued working on the map, located at his childhood home at Klejtrup Lake, until he died in 1969. Today the map comprises the center of a park offering outdoor activities and event space. Around 35,000 people visit every single year.

Poulson made the map out of rocks and dirt, using just hand tools, a pushcart, and a wheelbarrow. The Verdenskortet page explains the stones comprising the world map were moved onto the ice during winter, and then in spring the stones could be moved into place.

Flags mark each country, and there’s even yellow bricks dividing America up into states. Red poles indicate where the equator lies. The world map is 300 feet by 150 feet, and every 10 inches represents around 69 miles in the real world.

Today the park offers guided tours of Verdenskortet, paired with coffee and cake. People can play miniature golf on the grass, or take a class field trip to the map. Visitors can take a boat trip around the mini Pacific Ocean, and on land go on pony rides, play old Viking games, or jump on a trampoline. Park entry is inexpensive; around $12 for adults and $8 for kid

Chand Baori, Abhaneri

Chand Baori at Abhaneri Village in Rajasthan is the most photogenic step well of India. When you stand next to this 13 story deep step well with symmetric triangular steps leading to the water at the bottom, you cannot but be mesmerized. You, of course, understand that in the desert of Rajasthan, it is a practical water management solution. It also serves as a natural cooler in summer months. But, what inspired the people of those days to build it so beautifully. Were all the public spaces so beautiful in 9th CE? I wonder how India would have looked then.

It was built by the King named Chanda or Chandra of the Nikhumbha dynasty. The time of the stepwell is 8-9th CE making it 1200-1300 years old.

On three sides of this 19.5 meters deep step well are geometric steps. Steep triangular steps ensure that you get down or up sideways and not straight. I wonder if this was done just for aesthetics or there was a practical purpose as well. I could only think that going sideways maybe a little safe. It also allows multiple people to sit close to the water.

The fourth side has pillared corridors at multiple levels. Two balconies project towards the stepwell. They are adorned with the idols of Mahisasurmardini and Ganesha. The step-well also has an image of Sheshasayee Vishnu or the sleeping Vishnu. Here, I was told there is an image at one of the lower corridors. Since visitors are not allowed to enter the step well, it is not visible. Idea is that the stepwell or any water body is supposed to be an embodiment of Ksheersagar – the ocean of milk where Vishnu lives.

If you look closely you would see a shaft to pull water up from the stepwell. It is so well concealed in the structure that you more often than not miss it.

In all, there are 35,000 steps on 13 levels at the step-well. The Baori gets narrow as it goes down.

7 Cycling Groups To Join In Mumbai:

Are you looking to take up cycling to get in shape, have fun, or meet new people? These Mumbai-based cycling groups will give you companionship, expertise and sense of community, so grab your bike and hop on!

Mumbai Riders:
These folks hold cycling tours through South Mumbai and Bandra usually at night – they’re between three and four hours long – so if you’re looking to enjoy a bike ride while taking in the city’s heritage, sign right up. They meet twice a month.

Where: South Mumbai, Bandra
Price:Rs. 999 (including refreshments and cost to rent the bicycle)

Young Cycling Buddies:
This one consistsof a group of parents who conduct cycling sessions with their children. Theyassemble every Sunday morning (at 6.30 am), starting out at Juhu and ending at Bandra Fort or Versova Beach. They’re very big on safety, so make sure you and your kid have helmets, water, shoes and well-serviced bikes. You’ll also have to confirm your attendance by Saturday evening.

Where: Juhu, Andheri, Bandra
Price: Free. But you’ll need to bring a bicycle, protective gear and refreshments.

Pedal BUNNIES:
Pedal BUNNIES are a very dedicated cycling group. They meet up every morning between 8.00 am and 8.30 am at Juhu and ride to BKC on weekdays and as far as Haji Ali Mosque on weekends. They’re active on WhatsApp and Facebook. What we like about them is that anyone can suggest a route and find companions to join in.
