When Shark Week and Ice Cream Week collide...things get dangerously cool 😎

Sharks are making waves again this summer along New York City’s coastlines. But before we cue the Jaws soundtrack (which first debuted in the 1975) the story of sharks in our local waters is less about fear and more about environmental progress. As urban waters grow cleaner and fish populations rebound, sharks are returning to an ecosystem they once dominated.

Naturalist Gabriel Willow puts it into perspective. “Over the past 50 years since that summer, shark populations have declined globally due to overfishing, pollution, and other human-caused challenges. But locally, shark populations are thriving! They are likely drawn to our waters by warming conditions or by the increase in fish and seal populations resulting from cleaner environments due to the Clean Water Act and other regulations. So whether you fear them or are fascinated by them (or both), it’s a good thing that we have more sharks around NYC.”

This week, it’s not just Shark Week — it’s also Ice Cream Week at Classic Harbor Line. And yes, we’re celebrating!
