THE DOLLS COME OUT. THE MEMORIES COME ALIVE.

For ten days, they occupy the best corner of the house.

Rows of colourful dolls.
Tiny worlds recreated with care.
Stories from mythology, history and everyday life.

There are daily prayers and rituals.
Sweets and savories prepared and shared.

Haldi-kumkum/Vettala pakku.
Neighbours, friends and family dropping in.

Every household has its own collection.
Every family has its own way of arranging it.

And behind many of these displays are traditions passed down through generations.

What looks like a colourful display of dolls is actually a living piece of South Indian culture - shaped by mythology, history, regional traditions and centuries of cultural influences.

And perhaps that is why visiting a Golu is never just about looking at dolls.

You are stepping into someone’s home, someone’s memories, and a tradition that comes alive for just ten days every year.

Sharing some of these photographs are from our own Dasara memories with guests - visiting traditional homes, admiring the dolls, listening to stories and getting completely absorbed in the little worlds created on those steps. ❤️

HE BUILT THIS HOUSE. THEN GAVE IT AWAY.

Tucked away in Malleswaram is a 111-year-old house with quite a story.

Built around 1915, this was the home of H.V. Nanjundaiah - lawyer, judge, acting Diwan of Mysore, first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore and founding president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

But perhaps the most interesting part of the story is what happened to the house.

It eventually passed into government hands and became a school for girls.

So this wasn't just a grand residence. For generations of girls in Malleswaram, it became a place of education.

Look closely and you can see the fascinating mix of influences in the architecture - Mysorean courtyard planning, Victorian details, Gothic arches and elaborate ornamentation, all brought together in stone, wood and lime.

And this is exactly why Malleswaram is worth slowing down for.

Some of its best stories aren't monuments with signboards. They're buildings you walk past every day.

A Nandi. A water tank. And a mystery.

Hidden in Malleswaram is a remarkable temple where water continuously flows from the mouth of Nandi and falls onto the Shiva linga below.

What does a 120-year-old engineering idea have to do with Bengaluru today?

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

September 15 is Engineers’ Day, marking the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. His automatic sluice-gate system was developed during his years in the Bombay Presidency and later applied at the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam, one of the great engineering projects of its time. KRS continues to be an important source of water for Bengaluru even today.

But the KRS story is only one part of Visvesvaraya’s contribution to Mysore.

During his tenure as Dewan, he set out to build the foundations of a modern, industrialised kingdom. Industry, banking, education, technical training and railways were all part of that larger vision. The Bhadravati Iron & Steel Works was established under his leadership. He encouraged technical education to create a skilled workforce and was instrumental in the development of institutions such as the State Bank of Mysore and the University of Mysore.

His philosophy was summed up in three words: “Industrialise or Perish.”

What is striking is how much this was about thinking beyond individual projects. Visvesvaraya understood that a modern economy needed institutions, skilled people and infrastructure that could support its growth.

In a relatively short tenure, he helped lay many of the foundations on which Mysore’s later development would rest.

More than a century later, we can still see the results of that vision around us.

Perhaps that is what makes his story worth remembering on Engineers’ Day: some of the most lasting work is the work that continues to shape a place long after the person who imagined it is gone.

A delightful surprise for our guests at the Dodda Ganapathi Temple.

Standing nearly 18 feet tall and carved on a single stone , this majestic Ganesha is known for its beautiful Benne Alankara—a decoration made with over 100 kg of butter.

What makes it even more remarkable is that the butter remains intact despite the warmth inside the sanctum, something devotees see as a quiet miracle. Later, this butter is shared as prasadam among visitors.

To our surprise and delight, we were able to witness this rare darshan today—an unforgettable moment for our guests.
