Did you know the word Kargil is actually made up of two words – Khar and rkil. In the local language, Khar means castle and rkil means center. Therefore, Kargil translates to a place between the castles! However, according to some other sources, the words Gar and Khil make up Kargil. Gar is ‘anywhere’ and khil is ‘a central place’. This translates to a central place for people to stay. All thanks to Kargil tourism for this enlightenment!

I went on a 4-day long Kargil Winter Conclave organized by Kargil tourism and here is my experience in detail. Do read to know about NEW places to visit in Kargil and what you can expect from a winter trip to Kargil!!

Meet the A***ns from the land of A***n Valley in Kargil, India. It is believed that people of the A***n Village are known to be descendants of the wandering troops of Alexander of Macedonia, or the direct descendants of a pure Indo-A***n tribe.

Ladakh is sub-divided in five regions. Central, nubra valley, Changthang, zanskar & lower ladakh. The A***n valley falls into lower ladakh region where the road which goes to Leh also goes to A***n valley leading to 2 of its villages Dah Hanu and Parkachik which belongs to ladakh region . At the same time the Village of Garkone belongs to kargil district.

One can clearly see that their physical features are different from the rest of us. They’re tall, well built and fair complexioned, and a few of them have blonde hair and blue eyes. The people in this village use their own language which is “Brog-skad’.

The people do the A***n village love indulging their festivals which is known as “Bono-na “ and it is celebrated after a gap of at least three years. The gap of three year is because the first year Bono-na festival is celebrated in Dah, the second year it is celebrated in Garkon and the third year is left to a village called Ganogs, which is now in pakistan occupied baltistan.
