Tokyo's oldest Buddhist Temple complex consists of several buildings and related artworks and grounds. It's one of the capital's most popular attraction.
It has a long history dating back to the 7th century AD through the current buildings have been built several times, including after destruction from second world war aerial bombing.

The Mahabodhi Temple marks the location of the Buddha's enlightenment according to Buddhist tradition. A Bodhi tree still marks the location to commemorate the Buddha's discovery, though it is not the same tree.

Lord Buddha himself taught that basically, human nature is pure, egoless, just as the sky is by nature clear, not cloudy. Clouds come and go, but the blue sky is always there; clouds don’t alter the fundamental nature of the sky. Similarly, the human mind is fundamentally pure.

Jurakuji, founded in 815 by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) during his pilgrimage teachings, serves as a beacon of hope and enlightenment within Tokushima Prefecture's serene landscapes. According to the temple's foundation story, Kobo Daishi encountered a divine white snake, prompting him to carve and enshrine an image of Amitabha Buddha in a reclining position. Among its various spiritual offerings, the temple houses the deity Aizen Myoo within the Nakamondo Hall, symbolizing the transformation of earthly desires into enlightenment and spiritual awakening. The temple's history is characterized by resilience, spiritual guidance, and the ongoing pursuit of enlightenment. From its ancient origins in secluded valleys to its current standing amidst lush landscapes, Jurakuji continues to provide solace and joy to all who visit its sacred grounds, embodying the eternal teachings of Buddhism and the compassionate vision of Kobo Daishi. As we explore the Kanheri Caves nestled inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The land was originally owned by Buddhist monks for residential and agricultural purposes. Interestingly, some of the trees in the vicinity are as old as the caves themselves.
The Kanheri caves were built 1,400 years ago. The name originates from the Sanskrit word Krishnagiri, which literally translates to black mountain. The hills in which the caves are carved into are made of volcanic rock, and therefore the colour. The surrounding hills, however, are made of basalt.
The caves are the only site in western India to have artistic evidence of all the three vehicles of Buddhism — the three phases of the religion in India. The first, called Hinayana, had a no-image worship practice. Its teachings were passed down in Pali, an ancient language of this religious sect. The practitioners of the second phase, Mahayana Buddhists, were the ones who accepted image worship. They believed that every human being can become Buddha, unlike the teaching of the Hinayana sect that believed enlightenment was achievable only by Lord Buddha. Vajrayana Buddhism, the last phase, paved the way for a series of secret practices of worship comprising ta***ic methods to attain Buddhahood (enlightenment) quickly.
The monks residing in the caves were in close contact with the monks in China through a route in Central Asia called the Silk Route — an ancient international highway which helped in the Asia-wide spread of Buddha’s teachings.
