The best city escape from Pattaya is just 45 minutes ride away on a ferry. Koh Larn (Coral Island) is located just offshore of South Pattaya and a little paradise! Beaches are clean, and the water is always so clear. Enjoy all kind of activities like those you find on Jomtien and, in addition, view coral through glass-bottom boats or snorkeling.

Koh Larn (Coral Island) covers an area of about four square kilometers and is known for its beautiful white sandy beaches like Ta Waen, clear water and an abundance of coral, Koh Larn is less then 8 km west of Pattaya Beach - a trip which takes about 45 minutes by ferry or 20 minutes by speedboat. For visitors who are not diving enthusiasts, glass-bottom boats are available to view the coral.

The main scuba diving areas around Pattaya are located in what we call the “Far Islands”. These are the second ring of islands about 20 – 30 kilometers from Pattaya. The islands are controlled by the Thai Navy, and no permanent structures are built there (boat traffic also at a minimum).

These islands include Koh Rin, Koh ManWichai, Koh Keung Badaan, Koh Hu Chang and Kho Phi. Altogether, we have up to 20 different dive sites with visibility ranging from 5 – 15 meters.

There are many different types of soft and hard corals, and large schools of Jacks, Barracuda and Tuna. Blue spotted Stingrays, Turtles, Porcupine Puffer fish and Moray Eels can be spotted on virtually every dive.

A Lake of Islands

These islands are misleading in appearance. 100 years ago, neither they nor the lake in which they sit in existed. Qiandao Lake (or Thousand Island Lake) was formed from a planned flooding by the Chinese government around 1959. The lake is named for obvious reasons, containing more than 1,000 islands within it and covering a landmass of over 570 km2 (>350 mi2). Known for its incredibly clean water and thick-forested islands, Qiandao Lake looks like paradise; a safe haven where nothing but cool river water can reach. Although this incredibly unique lake may be paradise and a tourism hot-spot, the surrounding area looked significantly different in recent history.

Prior to 1959, Qiandao Lake was nonexistent. Instead, the valley where it now lies played home to the ancient cities of Shi Cheng and He Cheng more than 1,300 years ago. Both cities had major influences in in politics and economics and to this day, most of the cities' artifacts and infrastructures remain preserved and intact beneath the lake's surface. In 1959, in order to keep up with the area’s growing population, the Chinese government chose to submerse the valley in local river water in the overall effort to create a hydroelectric power plant. Hydroelectric systems are some of the oldest forms of energy production, with their earliest and simplest models (commonly known as water mills) dating back to the 3rd century B.C. by the ancient Greeks.

The basic concept behind hydroelectric power is to harness usable energy from the movement of water. Although this method has proven to be much more energy efficient than other methods such as the burning of fossil fuels, there can be significant damages to the environment in order for a plant to be constructed. The secret is to create hydroelectric plants in ways that not only save money in energy production, but also in ways that protect the environment since that is one of the major influences in constructing them in the first place. Qiandao Lake is far from perfect in terms of environmental sustainability, however it could be a step in the right direction and at least a primitive example of the technology that is to come.

The Colosseum, or the Coliseum, originally the Amphitheatrum Flavium is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire, built of concrete and stone. It is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering.

Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, and quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.

Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruined because of damage caused by devastating earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and still has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum.

Bupaya Pagoda is a notable pagoda located in Bagan, in Myanmar, on the banks of the Irrawady River. The small pagoda, which has a bulbous shaped dome, is widely believed to have been built by the third King of Pagan Pyusawdi who ruled from 168 to 243 AD. It is one of the most notable shrines among the thousands of new or ruined Pagodas in Bagan, which is located about 90 miles (140 km) south of Mandalay.

The pagoda had a massive gravity-type pyramidal profile. It was built with bricks and impressively decorated. It was a bell-shaped dome built over diminishing terraces. A finial crowned the dome. The pagoda enshrined Buddha's relics.

However, the new Bupaya Pagoda built at the same location in 1976–78, after the earthquake, is a hollow reinforced concrete structure (replacing the traditional brick structure of the past). It has been built on the traditional plan of a polygonal base. The pagoda rises up in "a series of crenellated semi-circular terraces overlooking the river". It is now fully gilded (pictured). The pagoda is now a very distinct landmark on the shores of the Irrawady River.
