The Sky Diver of Kabini! He's a bird. But someone forgot to tell him that. For, the Little Grebe prefers to cruise well below where other birds of a feather flock together. A strong swimmer who's much happier wetting his beak during his daily laps of the Kabini, one suspects that he often forgets he can fly. To prove this point, just startle him and he'll disappear in a jiffy. You, the lay observer, will probably wonder where he's vanished, and try to spot him high up in the forested canopy. We, however, would advise you to look lower, for this aviator prefers to dive underwater when danger threatens. If you're patient, you'll see his periscope emerge, scanning the horizon for any visible danger. If you don't fall within that category (chances are, you won't, for he's far less wary than his suspicious duck neighbours), he'll be back practising his breaststroke.

If some of our male readers had the chance to become someone else and live that person’s life, we wouldn’t be surprised if they chose to bypass obvious culprits like ‘the world’s richest man’, and instead chose an Arab sheikh or emir with a harem of wives at his beck and call. Now if we were to give our women readers the same offer (and suggest the harem idea), chances are that they would balk…after all who has heard of women with harems? They’ve obviously not heard of the Bronze-winged Jacana, who takes women’s empowerment to the next level by keeping a retinue of husbands in her harem. But she’s not alone in her peccadillo! Among humans, Polyandry, or the practice of women having multiple husbands, was prevalent in some parts of the world, most notably in Tibet. Coming back to the female Jacana, she’s much larger than the male, and, in her role-reversed, territorial social structure, competes with other females for harems of males to incubate their clutches of eggs. Much like the relationship between an emperor and his vassals, each female’s territory comprises up to four males and their territories.

The Kabini Armoured Corps! Gone are the days of Sir Lancelot, Sir Galahad and other knights in shining armour. When you think of armour today, the mind can't go beyond those mainstays of modern armies: Main Battle Tanks! Think WW2, and you think of Panzers steam-rolling Europe; names like Sherman, Patton, Tiger and Centurion roll off the tongue with felicity... but the one armoured vehicle that is least known is the one that hunts down enemies by night in some of the most difficult terrain around. This is the rare Indian Pangolin, or Scaly Anteater of Kabini that lives mostly on ants and termites that it digs up from the earth and logs with its long, powerful claws which are almost as long as its forelegs. For self-defense it's equipped with large, armoured scales that overlap each other, providing an impenetrable cladding against all foes. In fact, the Pangolin can curl up into an armoured ball when threatened, and frustrate even the fiercest tigers in the vicinity.

Night Trails: an unusual ‘night cap’ for nocturnal nature lovers
As night descends upon the Kabini landscape a whole world of nocturnal life emerges. For those of you who are not lured by after-dinner television or emails then set off to explore nature around the resort at night, armed only with flashlights and a sense of anticipation and wonder. Our naturalists will skillfully es**rt you around the areas just outside the resort and by the Kabini’s waterline that harbor a small universe of creatures that do most of their living at night. You will encounter the fascinating nocturnal world of beetles, spiders, owls, moths, lizards and even plants as you go about this unusual night expedition. Recommended for all nature lovers but particularly for the adventurous and the curious, this is an experience that is as unique as it is educative.

The Ultimate Stick Trick! When you think of flying sticks and tricks, you tend to think of Bruce Lee and his famous split-stick, the Nunchaku, or circus acts where clowns and magicians make simple sticks do their bidding. But have you ever known a stick that has a mind of its own, and can do things beyond the normal? Welcome to the world of the esoteric Phasmatodea, otherwise known as the Stick Insect or 'Walking Stick'. This past master of disguise lives among the trees and twigs looking like one of them. If the mimicry doesn't work, it confounds predators by either playing dead, or breaking off a limb, and scurrying away, only to regrow it by molting again. This long-legged lady is no simpering lass... she's not only the longest insect in the world, but a true blue Amazon:
