Take a walk through history!! Visit the Architectural Gems of Cambodia with The Untrodden Road in February this year!

Below is the Benteay Srei Temple of the Khmer Empire. Over a thousand years old, the temple is studded with stories from mythology in the form of sculptures on sandstone. Between its size being unusually small for Angakorian standards and its elaborate wall carvings, it is widely praised as the 'Jewel of Khmer Art'

Built in 11th Century, the Baphuon was the state temple of Yashodhapura, the capital city of Khmer. It measures 120m x 100m at its base and stands 34m tall without its tower, which would have made it roughly 50m tall and it's said to have been once plated with bronze! Built on land filled with sand, the temple has been unstable throughout history and was only recently opened to visitors after much restoration. Join us this February, and witness the colossal temple of Baphuon in Angkor Thom, the last enduring city of Khmer empire!

Redesigned by Ar.Geoffrey Bawa in 1976, the Seema Malaka is a part of the Gangaramaya Temple and floats on the water of the Beira Lake. Made with spindles and handrails with wooden finishes, it is the only modern Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka and its design is inspired by the ancient monasteries of the Ritigala Forest. Various statues of Buddha in different mudras are built all around the temple platform. While the design is quite revolutionary it recognises a number of precedents and reveals the depth of Bawa’s interest in classical Sinhalese architecture.

A blend of tradition and modernity, the Gangaramaya Temple is the perfect mix of Modern architecture and cultural essence which is responsible for its stunning architectural design. This Buddhist temple is built on a plot of land that was originally a small hermitage on a piece of marshy land and is located not far from the waters of the Beira Lake. Apart from the main shrine the temple premises also house a museum, a library and educational halls. The temple's architecture demonstrates an eclectic mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architecture and is a feast to the eyes of a person who appreciates design. So join us on the Tour to Sri Lanka this January and see the beauty of architecture yourself.

Geoffrey Bawa was one of the most talented and influential Asian architects of all time. His office and residence are amazement to architects all over the world. Bawa used his home as a canvas for architectural experimentation. With a unique hybrid courtyard and a combination of indoor and outdoor living rooms, Bawa designed his house as a grand décor of 4 bungalows with a sequence of spaces. It is an inspiring site especially to students of architecture to see where the gifted artist worked and experimented with his ideas. Pay a visit to this site with The Untrodden Road’s Sri Lanka architectural tour this January.
