THE DAY THE LAKE DISAPPEARED
The legend of Lamayuru begins with a lake, a monk, and a mystery.

ONCE, THERE WAS A LAKE
Legend says the valley of Lamayuru was once filled with a vast, still lake.

THEN CAME NAROPA
A wandering monk named Naropa came to the hillside and meditated in a cave above the water.

AND THE LAKE WAS GONE
The story says the lake slowly drained away, revealing the valley floor beneath.

THE LION ON THE LAKEBED
Tradition holds that Naropa discovered the body of a lion.
A shrine was raised over it — Singh Ghang, the “Lion Mound.”

LEGEND OR LOST LAKE?
The cave associated with Naropa is still preserved at Lamayuru.
