Sudder Street - One of the most famous streets in Kolkata, India, where global nomads, backpackers, volunteers and tourists passing come for affordable hotels, shopping, great food and to congregate. Sudder Street can be a wonderful place to stay while in Kolkata, but it is also filled with scamers, drug pushers, beggars who aren't really poor (many of the women/men constantly asking for money ac

tually have homes and real jobs), unhygienic restaurants and unsanitary street food, men of all ages constantly and inappropriately hounding foreign women and high priced souvenirs and clothes, train/airfare tickets and sightseeing tours that can be bought cheaper elsewhere. Please do not contribute to the illegal and unnecessary underground culture of the city by enabling these practices.

The advisory asked US citizens to avoid travelling to tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls and government facilities, claiming they are vulnerable to terrorist attacks.

The US Department of State has maintained a Level 2 advisory to American citizens and workers living in India, asking them to "exercise increased caution", in the wake of incidents of crime and terrorism. The Trump administration has also asked women not to travel alone and be extra alert while at any tourist sites and other locations.

"Exercise increased caution in India due to crime and terrorism. Some areas have increased risk. Violent crime and terrorism occur in India. R**e is one of the fastest growing crimes in India. Violent crimes, including s*xual assault, happen at tourist sites and other locations," the advisory, which was reissued on June 16 after periodic review with updates to entry/exit requirements, said.

A Catholic archdiocese in southern Indian Kerala state has suspended a priest from pastoral ministries after he was accused of s*xually abusing a 16-year-old boy for at least four months a year ago.

The Archdiocese of Tellicherry, in an official statement released to the media on June 15, announced that Archbishop Joseph Pamplany suspended Father Paul Thattuparambil, a retreat preacher, following allegations.

Thattuparambil was the priest of St Paul's Church in Athirumavu village when he was suspended.

Considering the “seriousness and scandalous nature of the allegation of child abuse that is circulating among the public against Thattuparambil,” he has been removed from the parish with “immediate effect,” said the statement dated June 8.

The priest was accused of abusing the grade-eleven student multiple times from May 15 to August 13, 2024, and action was taken when the complaint reached the archbishop, the statement said.

Ten of thousands of penguins, clustered together on the Antarctic Peninsula, can produce some potent stenches. Now, scientists have found that all that waste could be powerful enough to cool the climate.

The gases from penguin p**p help fuel cloud formation, scientists found, which can change the temperature in the Antarctic. Clouds act like giant reflectors, blocking sunlight that would otherwise be heating the planet.

Scientists from the University of Helsinki observed this at a colony of 60,000 Adélie penguins. As the wind shifted in the direction of the researchers, a fog formed over the course of a few hours. Using highly sensitive equipment, they measured high levels of ammonia gas, leading to cloud formation, which could be happening all over Antarctica. They published the findings in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.

The scientists say more research is needed to understand the overall effect on the climate, because while clouds reflect heat, they can also trap it under certain conditions. It's a key process to understand given the rapid changes at the farthest reaches of the world.

The poles are warming faster than the rest of the planet, as the climate gets hotter. That's altering the ecosystem for the penguins, as well as causing global impacts. Melting glaciers in Antarctica are causing sea levels to rise, posing a risk to millions of people around the world.

"It's quite interesting how such a small thing that you would never necessarily think about can have an impact on something else that's much bigger than itself," says Matthew Boyer, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Helsinki, who co-authored the study.

Norwegian tourist Mads Mikkelsen, 21, was allegedly denied entry to the US at Newark Airport after officials found a meme of VP JD Vance on his phone. He faced intense questioning, searches, and fingerprinting before being sent back to Norway. Mikkelsen was traveling to visit friends and national parks.

He was taken to a room guarded by armed officers and forced to hand over his shoes, phone, and backpack. When he hesitated to unlock his phone, agents threatened imprisonment or a $5,000 fine, prompting him to comply.

Upon accessing his phone, they discovered a meme of digitally altered JD Vance, made to appear chubby and bald, a popular image following Ukrainian President Zelensky’s contentious visit to the Oval Office in February. They also disapproved of a photo showing Mikkelsen with a homemade wooden pipe.

Despite Mikkelsen explaining that the images were jokes and saved automatically from a chat app, the officials proceeded to search him further, taking blood samples and fingerprints. He described the experience as feeling like a terrorist suspect, which left him mentally and physically drained. After a 12-hour transatlantic flight with little rest, he was eventually put on a return flight to Norway the same day.

Mikkelsen was asked to provide detailed information about everyone he planned to meet in the US, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and occupations. The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment.

Transphobic billionaire author J.K. Rowling has encouraged random people in the United Kingdom to photograph people in women’s restrooms just in case they are transgender. Her advice is likely to result in the public harassment of cisgender women who don’t fit people’s preconceived notions of how a cis woman “should” look — such harassment has occurred many times in the past.

In a Saturday post on X, Rowling noted that someone asked her, “How are you planning to police public toilets” in light of the recent U.K. Supreme Court ruling that the legal definition of men and women in the country’s anti-discrimination law is based on biological s*x. After the ruling, the U.K.’s Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said trans women and men “should not be permitted to use” the public restroom facilities that align with their gender.

In response, Rowling said that policing trans people in public toilets can be handled, “Quite easily, really. Decent men will stay out, as they always have, so we can assume all who don’t are a threat, given their disregard for women’s and girls’ safety, privacy and dignity. Photographing, reporting and disseminating such men’s images online will be a piece of cake.”

In the U.K., it is generally illegal to photograph people in restrooms.

In response, freelance columnist Darryl Mott wrote on Bluesky, “In case you can’t tell what just happened, JK Rowling instructed her followers to take photos of anyone in a women’s restroom who doesn’t match their idea of Western feminine beauty standards. Short hair? Thick cheekbones/jaw? Too tall or broad-shouldered? You’re now ‘a man’ and will be harassed.”
