The ancient legend behind Dhanteras goes back to the 16-year-old son of King Hima. His horoscope predicted his death by snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. Therefore, on this day, his newly-wed wife laid out all her ornaments and gold and silver coins at the entrance. The next day, the god of Death arrived at the prince's doorstep, disguised as a serpent but was blinded by the dazzling jewellery and climbed on top of the heap of gold coins and sat there until the following morning and left at dawn. Due to this, Dhanteras is celebrated every year and people buy lots of gold on this particular day.
