From the small town of Pennagaram the travel to the Hogenakkal water falls gets quite interesting for it goes through a series of villages. These villages are mainly into the vegetation of mulberry which is usually used as a fodder for the silkworms. As you travel through these villages you get fascinated by the guardian deities, often referred to as Aiyanars.Made of terracotta or plastered brick, these giant figures are brightly colored and generally depict fearsome and mustachioed warriors. As the journey takes us closer and closer to destination we can see the tall trees dancing according to the wind and we can hear the roaring and the gushing sound of the water.

When they are not in use it is upturned and left on the banks of the river. The Coracles are also referred as parisals by the local people. One who is visiting Hogenakkal should never miss the massage from the masseurs or the malishwalas who are quite knowledgeable about the different massage points in the human body. Hi friends today we are celebrate a famous festival of TAMILNADU PEOPLES (chennai) in this event have one special thing is KOLAMS . Each day before the break of dawn, millions of women in south India say silent prayers, as they sprinkle their hearth with rice flour to make kolams. These designs or rather kolams announce the arrival of each new day and are a symbol of welcome to Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of weath) to dwell in the home they represent. These painted prayers are formed using a pattern of dots that are connected with lines or are looped to form intricate patterns and designs. This ritual is repeated every morning, Indian women wash their threshold with water and wax it with cow dung, then with deft and nimble fingers they craft out designs to adorn their doorsteps. Each mornings new patterns replaces the fading pattern of yesterday.

Kolam is as old as civilization is. It dates back to the Indus valley civilization. In the Mahabharata, the gopis (milkmaids) drew kolams to forget the pain that they experienced when their beloved Krishna is away. At a much later date, Kolam-drawing is listed as one of the 64 forms of art in Vatsyayana's Ka*****ra.

Just like with many of our traditions this one too has a story to tell. Art Historians believe Kolams originated from people who lived on the seashore, who invariably found a design in the arrangements of stars, which remained a guiding factor when they ventured into the sea. The prime stars noted by the shore dwellers were Orion, Acula and Leo representing Lord Shiva, Mayan and Goddess Sakthi. The celestial designs of stars were brought to terrestrial thresholds of homes in the form of magical diagrams called `kolam,'

Some say the dots in the kolam represent the men and lines women. It depicts the lives of women who weave their life around their menfolk. Kolams are drawn in such a way no dots are left unconnected or hanging and folklore says this closed patterns prevents evil from entering the homes.

The kolam or their more contemporary counterpart the rangoli as it is known in the north, has come to mean many thinks in more recent times. It is a link between the private realm and vast challenging world outside. A few lines and dots or the lack of them speaks in abundance about a particular household or village to a passer by.

A kolam also represents the symbiotic relation a man shares with other species, small birds and insects don’t have to go far hunting for food, the rice flour feeds them well. Kolams can be seen in all its grandeur during festivities, ceremonies and auspicious occasions. Most of them can be divided into families, one such being the Brahma’s knot that has a distinctive pattern of looping.

Today kolam is an ornamental motif that adorns the threshold and the rice flour is being replaced by ugly vinyl stickers. This hand-me down art from mother to daughter is loosing its relevance in the more cosmopolitan context. However, efforts are being made to keep this tradition from becoming a thing of the past, the Mylapore temple festival is one such attempt. A walk down old temple streets of Tanjavur, Chidambaram or Mylapore will give you a whiff of this ancient art that tells you the story of the stars.

The Madras Gymkhana Golf course is a links style 18 hole, 6690 yard, Par 72 course that has a unique location within a horse race track at Guindy in Chennai. Open to the vagaries of weather (read can be very windy) the course is known for its tricky roughs and the unpredictable wind factor. The golf course annexe is a part of the Madras Gymkhana club that is located at the Island grounds on Anna Salai.

The Madras Golf club was established in 1877 after the Royal Calcutta Golf Course (RCGC) which was established in 1829 and the Bangalore Golf Club (BGC) which went on stream in 1876.

Originally started from the Island Grounds, the course was shifted to Guindy sometime around 1887. The Guindy Golf course originally had 9 holes and graduated to 14 holes and then to 16 before becoming a full fledged 18 hole golf course. Originally played off the browns, the transformation to greens was not to happen until the 1980s. All along, Guindy Golf course was known for its roughs, the tall and prickly grass bordering most fairways which posed a challenge to golfers with the ever changing wind.Col Ross Thompson was the first Captain of the golf club and in the year 1878, the first inter-club competition between MGC and BGC teed off. This remains to date the world’s oldest such continuing competition between two golf clubs. In the year 2002, the golf club celebrated 125 years of golf, a feat very few golf clubs outside of Great Britain can boast of. Many things may have changed over the years, but the Madras Gymkhana Golf Annexe breathes the history of golf in India every time the wind sweeps across the vast expanse of open land.

The greens play true for most part and the narrow approach to several greens mask the deceptive nature of the links course with no sign of trees. The five 3 pars in the course can all prove difficult for an advanced golfer to make pars – they are long and the wind is usually blowing sideways. The most deceptive hole in the course is perhaps the 3 par 11, a short 150 yard approach to the green bounden on the front and side by out-of-bounds and a tough chip shot awaiting you if you go over the green from the tee.

Presently, the local rules permits one preferred lie on a 3 par and two preferred lies on par 4 and par 5 holes, should you keep your ball within the fairways. There are well over 60 bunkers on the course, most of them guarding the relatively small greens.

History of KANYAKUMARI AMMAN The 3000 year old Kumari Amman temple at this place is dedicated to Virgin Goddess Kanyakumari, who stands in eternal vigil protecting the country, is surrounded by a stone wall and stands on the edge of the ocean. The entrance to the temple is through the northern gate, while the eastern gate always remains closed except on some festival days, when deity is taken out for the ceremonial bath. The deity is facing the east.

Goddess Kanyakumari has the legendary account that once Banusura, the demon king got supremacy over Devas and meted out cruel punishment to them. The Devas performed a Yagna pleading to annihilate the evils. Goddess Parasakthi came to Kumari in the form of a virgin girl and began her penance. Meanwhile Lord Shiva fell in love with her and arrangements for the marriage were made in the midnight a particular day. Now the Devine sage Narada realised that their marriage would destroy the chances of annihilating Banusura because he could be killed only by a virgin. When Lord Shiva was on his way to Kanyakumari from Suchindrum at Valukkamparai 5 kms south of Suchindram, Sage Narada assumed the form of a c**k and crowed falsely heralding the break of dawn. Thinking that the auspicious time for the marriage was past, Lord Shiva returned disappointed. The Goddess too decided to remain virgin after that. Then, when Banusura attempted to win the Goddess by force, she killed him with her Chakragudha, and relieved the suffering s of Devas. Then she resumed her penance and remained virgin.

After a walk around the outer corridor and crossing the Navaratri Mandapam, the pathway leads to the second corridor encircling the shrine. At the entrance here, after worshipping Kala Bhairava and crossing the well (known as Patal Ganga Teerth), the devotees reach the Dhwajastambha (fllagmast). From here one can have a clear view of the Devi before going in front of the sanctum sanctorum.

The Devi stands as a charming young girl in her penance with a rosary in her right hand, and a sparkling nose jewel that sheds lustrous radiance. It is believed that the nose ring of Devi Kanyakumari set with rubies are so bright and that could be seen from far at night. Also it is told that some ships sailing in the sea, mistaking the brilliance of the rubies for the light from the Lighthouse , went off shore got wrecked, hitting against the rocks nearby. In this point of view eastern side gate of the temple is kept closed. The idol made of blue stone, is believed to have installed by sage Parshurama.

After worshipping the Goddess, pilgrims enter the inner corridor, where they can have the darshan of Indra Vinayak. There is also a small shrine dedicated to Tyaga Sundari.

History of MADURAI MEENAKSHI AMMAN

The history of Madurai dates back thousands of years- almost to 6th century B.C. It was a key commercial center for the Pandya dynasty that ruled the place. The temple is said to have been constructed somewhere around this time by Kulashekara Pandyan.

Mythology:
Legend has it that the reigning deity Meenakshi was born out of holy fire as an answer to the prayers of King Malayadwaja and his wife Kanchanamalai. She married Lord Shiva and both ruled the city of Madurai as Lord Sundareshwar and Goddess Meenakshi. It is also believed that Lord Indra founded the temple when he found a suyambu lingam. There’s also mention about the temple in ancient Tamil literature through

It is said that Lord Vishnu, Meenakshi’s brother travelled all the way from Srivaikuntam- his abode to witness the marriage. But he couldn’t make it on time and the marriage was solemnized without his presence. Angered by this insult, he vowed never to enter Madurai and settled in nearby Azaghar Kovil. He was later convinced and to this day, his pacification is celebrated as Azhaghar Thiruvila.

Modern Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple History

It is said that the temple was plundered in the 14th century by the Muslim raider Malik Kafur who looted the temple of its valuables. Restoration was undertaken by the Nayak ruler Vishwanatha Nayakar around the 16th century. It was Vishwanatha Nayak who rebuilt the temple in accordance to shilpa shastra.

Interesting Information About the Temple:

History of Kumarakom
Kumarakom is on man-made land reclaimed from the vast Vembanad Lake. The name Kumarakom was derived from the deity of its oldest temple Kumaran. Kumaran’s Akam or place became Kumarakom. The place was fertile and most suitable for cultivation of rice and coconut trees. This village was part of Vadakkancore kingdom. But in 1750 Marthanda Varma the King of Travacore conquered and annexed it to Travancore. The first Christian Church was built here in the year 1769 in the land granted by the King of Travancore. History of Chennai Math
Swami Vivekananda’s days of wandering throughout India ended when he reached Chennai in January 1893. His young, enthusiastic disciples in Chennai were primarily responsible for his historic participation at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago. Throughout Swamiji’s four-year-long stay in the West, he kept in close touch with his followers in Chennai. Swamiji was given a grand reception on his return from the West in February 1897. During that period, he stayed for nine days at the Ice House (now Vivekanandar Illam). When his devotees in Chennai requested him to start a permanent centre in the city, he readily agreed and deputed his brother disciple, Swami Ramakrishnananda, to initiate the Order’s activities in southern India.

Swami Ramakrishnananda was a great thinker, an erudite scholar, a forceful speaker. Above all, he was a God-realized saint. He not only founded Sri Ramakrishna Math in Chennai but was also responsible for spreading the movement throughout parts of southern India. The various activities that the Math carries on today were initiated by the great Swami himself.

According to Swami Vivekananda’s wishes, Swami Ramakrishnananda arrived in Chennai in March 1897. He stayed at a rented house in Triplicane for a few months. Then he came to the Ice House. The Math was based at the Ice House up until the end of 1907. Then it shifted to Mylapore, to a building constructed on a plot gifted by Sri A. Kondiah Chettiar, a close devotee of the Math. Surrounding plots were acquired in subsequent years. Due to structural damage to the existing building, another building was constructed and this building was consecrated by Swami Brahmananda, the first President of Ramakrishna Order, in the year 1917. This remains now as the ‘Old Temple’. Apart from the fact that the Math in Chennai was founded by Swami Ramakrishnananda, who lived here for a long time, the Math was also sanctified by the visits of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, Swamis Brahmananda, Premananda, Shivananda, Abhedananda and Vijnanananda, all direct disciples of Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna.
