Weekend trip at Pulicat . Pulicat is famous for second largest brackish water lagoon in South. asia measuring 720 Sq.km . The history of PULICAT can be traced to the Chola Kingdom(10 th century AD) when it was a major port city, the presence of Chola Period Samayeswarar temple in pulicat bears testimony to the region . In 1422 AD, Devaraja - II named pulicat as Anandrayan Pattinam after his governor Anandaraya, later the name was changed to Pazhaverkadu, as it was covered with mangroves. Portuguese 1502 AD were the first Europeans to land in Pulicat followed by the Dutch (1605 AD) and then by British. Pulicat lying north of Chennai at 55 Km played an important role in creation of the city Madras (Now Chennai) . Pulicat had first mint and gun powder making factory in India, and its flourishing trade links spanned up to Japan, all over South East Asia and Europe.
