From Immersion to Action: Exploring Darjeeling Through a Different Lens

The first chapter of the Darjeeling Immersion with Masters’ Union brought a group of senior management students to a forest village in the hills for a day of experiential learning, reflection, and real-world problem-solving.

The day began with a Singing Bowl Meditation session led by a much-revered Tibetan Buddhist monk from the region. Held at a location surrounded by the forests of Darjeeling, the session offered the students a moment to slow down, be present, and turn their attention inward before beginning the day’s activities.

The students then engaged with some of the real challenges shaping the region. Facilitated by Team Darjeeling Walks and Team TIEEDI, the exercise invited them to look closely at Darjeeling through the lens of its communities, environment, and local economy.

Divided into five groups, the students explored challenges ranging from limited access to funding and low awareness and visibility to gaps in government support, the pressures of mass tourism, environmental and wildlife conservation, and inadequate waste management. Through business model and solution-building exercises, they worked towards developing practical and locally relevant responses to these challenges.

The day culminated in solution pitches and reflection sessions, with each group presenting its ideas to experts from Masters’ Union and TIEEDI. The discussions gave the students an opportunity to question assumptions, refine their ideas, and consider how business can respond more thoughtfully to local needs.

The experience encouraged the students to look beyond Darjeeling’s identity as a destination and engage with it as a living ecosystem, and opened up a larger conversation about how thoughtful, locally grounded business solutions can contribute to more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient communities.

As part of a week-long Darjeeling Immersion, a group of senior management students from Masters’ Union spent a morning in a forest village of Darjeeling, experiencing a quieter and more contemplative side of the hills.

The day began with a Singing Bowl Meditation session led by a much-revered Tibetan Buddhist monk. Surrounded by forests and the stillness of the village, the session offered the students a chance to pause, be present, and turn their attention inward. It also created a meaningful space to reflect on the importance of listening and observation qualities that would shape the day ahead.

The morning then moved into a rural immersion, where the students were encouraged to observe their surroundings and engage with the realities of life in a hill community. Moving beyond the classroom, they began to look closely at the social, economic, and environmental challenges that shape the region, setting the context for the real-world problem-solving exercise that followed.

A wholesome lunch in the forest village brought the morning to a close, offering time for informal conversations, reflection, and a chance to take in the experience at a slower pace.

The true soul of these mountains lives in the everyday cadence of its communities. It echoes in the cheerful greetings along a cobblestone ridge, the vibrant hum of the local bazaar, and the shared warmth of traditions that weave together like colorful prayer flags fluttering in the mountain wind.

You never truly leave the hills; they linger in the quiet corners of your memory, carried on the scent of damp pine, woodsmoke, and the unmistakable crispness of a high-altitude morning.

To remember Darjeeling is to trace a path through layers of living history and shifting light. It is waking up before dawn just to watch the first golden rays catch the icy crest of Kanchenjunga, painting the sleeping peaks in rose and amber. It is the slow, rhythmic unfurling of the mist as it swallows and reveals the terraced tea gardens below - landscapes carved by generations of hands, where every slope tells a story of patience, land, and heritage.

True independence is far more than a political milestone marked on a calendar; it is a profound state of inner liberation. As we celebrate the 80th Independence Day, we are reminded that sovereign borders create the canvas, but it is up to us to paint the living spirit of freedom within. This inner liberation finds its truest, most poetic expression in Bhraman—not merely as movement across geography, but as a pilgrimage of the soul. When we step beyond the familiar walls of our daily routines and cross thresholds into the unknown, we begin to shed the rigid armor of our biases, routines, and mental conditioning.

In that vast, unmapped space, travel becomes an act of quiet rebellion against narrowness. Every winding mountain pass, every unfamiliar dialect, and every horizon stretching endlessly before us gently dissolves the walls we build around ourselves. True travel teaches us that the mind is its own geography, and by witnessing the breathtaking diversity of the world, we learn to unchain our thoughts from fear and prejudice. To travel deeply is to practice being truly free, honoring the spirit of independence in its most expansive and transcendent form.

Celebrating the 80th Independence Day!

"I remember in late February 1962 my father accompanying me to India from Rangoon to put me in St. Paul's. Even while I was at the Methodist English High School in Rangoon through my primary school, I knew I would have to leave for St. Paul's someday. The two sons of Mr. R.N. Burjorjee, Rustam and Sarosh, were already there. Mr Burjorjee, himself a successful lawyer like my father, had preceded my father as the President of the All Burma Indian Congress. Mr. P.M. Bose's three sons, Ronald, Donald and Skinny, who were several years senior to me, had already completed their schooling when I arrived in St. Paul's. Mr. Bose was a leading stevedore and stood in as a guarantor at the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank in Rangoon for leading businessmen those days. My father's classmate in school, Dr C.C. Dey, had also sent his son to St. Paul's. Helen, his daughter and a few years my senior, studied with me at Methodist.

I was eleven years old when my father decided that my English was not English enough. So, he decided to send me to St. Paul's School Darjeeling to be groomed into a gentleman in the best of English public school tradition. In those days, St. Paul's was rated as Eton of the East, served by Scottish matrons and Irish nurses while Oxbridge graduates were tasked with ‘educating' young Indians for higher aspirations in life.

Moniti Meliora Sequamur ran the school motto: having been taught the higher ways, we followed. And the school song echoed much the same sentiment: "From the low and steamy plains, upward the old school calls!" rising to a crescendo with "Upward the old school calls, St Paul's! St Paul's! St Paul's!"

His diverse career includes teaching in Delhi (1973–1985), working with UNICEF (1985–1996), and practicing law in London. He also served as a U.S. government Judicial Advisor in Baghdad (2009–2010) and sat on the Commission for Sustainable London (2007–2013). He continues to serve as a Trustee and Board Member of the Hindu Council, UK.
