Kedarnath is a town in the Indian state of Uttarakhand and has gained importance because of Kedarnath Temple. It is a nagar panchayat in Rudraprayag district. The most remote of the four Chota Char Dham sites, Kedarnath is located in the Himalayas, about 3,583 m (11,755 ft) above sea level near Chorabari Glacier, the source of river Mandakini, and is flanked by snow-capped peaks, most prominently Kedarnath mountain. The nearest road head is at Gaurikund about 16kms away.

History of kedarnath
Kedarnath has been a pilgrimage centre since ancient times. It is not certain who constructed the original Kedarnath temple and when. A mythological account ascribes the temple's construction to the legendary Pandava brothers mentioned in the Mahabharata.[5][6] However, the Mahabharata does not mention any place called Kedarnath. One of the earliest references to Kedarnath occurs in the Skanda Purana (c. 7th-8th century), which names Kedara (Kedarnath) as the place where Shiva released the holy waters of Ganga from his matted hair, resulting in the formation of the Ganges river.[7]

According to the hagiographies based on Madhava's Sankshepa-Shankara-Vijaya, the 8th century philosopher Adi Shankara died near the Kedaranatha (Kedarnath) sanctuary; although other hagiographies, based on Anandagiri's Prachina-Shankara-Vijaya, state that he died at Kanchi. The ruins of a monument marking the purported resting place of Shankara are located at Kedarnath.[8] Kedarnath was definitely a prominent pilgrimage centre by the 12th century when it is mentioned in Kritya-kalpataru written by the Gahadavala minister Bhatta Lakshmidhara

Other than Kedarnath temple, on the eastern side of the town is Bhairava temple,[10] and the deity of this temple, the Bhairava, is believed to protect the town during winter months. Climate
Kedarnath Temple is closed during the winter months due to heavy snow. For six months, from November to April, the Palki with the Utsava Murti (Idol) of Lord Kedarnath is brought to a place called Ukhimath, near Guptakashi. Priests and other summertime residents also move their homes to nearby villages. Around 360 families of Tirtha Purohit of 55 villages and other nearby villages are dependent on Kedarnath for livelihood.[citation needed]

According to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification system, Kedarnath's climate is monsoon-influenced subarctic climate (Dwc), bordering a uniform rainfall subarctic climate (Dfc) with mild, rainy summers and cold, snowy winters.

दिनभर में तीन बार रूप बदलती हैं ये देवी, इनके गुस्से से पानी में समा गई थी देवभूमि

दुनियाभर में अध्यात्म और आस्था के लिए प्रसिद्ध राज्य उत्तराखंड की अपनी अलग पहचान है। यहां कई ऐसे धार्मिक स्थान हैं जो पौराणिक काल से मौजूद हैं। प्राचीन ऋषि मुनियों की परंपरा को थामे उत्तराखंड यूं ही नहीं देवभूमि कहलाता है। यहां हर साल कई सैलानी शांत वातावरण की तलाश में आते हैं। यूं तो उत्तराखंड में अनगिनत प्रसिद्ध मंदिर मौजूद हैं लेकिन आज हम आपको यहां के एक ऐसे मंदिर के बारे में बताने जा रहे हैं जहां की देवी उत्तराखंड की रक्षक मानी जाती हैं।

वैसे तो उत्तराखंड में कई चमत्कारी मंदिर हैं लेकिन जिस मंदिर के बारे में हम आपको बताने जा रहे हैं वो सालों से इस राज्य की रक्षा कर रही हैं। ये मंदिर है मां धारी देवी का जो उत्तराखंड की रक्षा में यहां स्थापित हैं। यहां के स्थानीय लोगों का मनना है कि उत्तराखंड में जितने भी धार्मिक स्थल हैं उनकी भी रक्षा धारी माता ही करती हैं। माता के प्रकोप से बचने के लिए मंदिर में पूजा-पाठ पूरे विधि विधान से की जाती है, हालांकि ऐसा कभी नहीं हुआ कि माता ने यहां के लोगों को दंडित किया हो लेकिन फिर भी लोग यहां के हर नियम का पालन करते हैं।

जानकारी के बता दें, माता का सिद्धपीठ उत्तराखंड के श्रीनगर से लगभग 15 किमी की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह मंदिर कलियासौड़ इलाके में अलकनंदा नदी के तट पर स्थित है। यहां के जानकारों के अनुसार, इस मंदिर के साक्ष्य साल 1807 में पाए गए थे। वहीँ यहां के महंत का कहना है कि मंदिर 1807 से भी कई साल पुराना है। मान्यता है कि इस मंदिर में देवी माता दिन में तीन बार अपना रूप बदलती हैं। लेकिन इनका गुस्सा भी किसी से छुपा नहीं है, यहां के लोगों की मानें तो केदारनाथ में आया प्रलय धारी देवी के गुस्से का ही नतीजा था।

मान्यता है कि इस मंदिर में रोजाना माता तीन रूप बदलती हैं। सुबह कन्या, दोपहर में युवती और शाम को वृद्धा का रूप धारण करती हैं। बता दें कि बद्रीनाथ जाने वाले श्रद्धालु यहां रूककर माता के दर्शन अवश्य करते हैं। पौराणिक महत्व के अनुसार एक बार प्राकृतिक आपदा के दौरान माता का मंदिर पूरी तरह बह गया था, लेकिन एक चट्टान जैसी शिला से सटी मां की प्रतिमा पास के धारों नाम के गांव में बची रही। फिर गांववालों ने यहां धारी माता का मंदिर बना दिया और तबसे जो श्रद्धालु यहां आता है वो मां के दरबार में हाजिरी लगाकर ही जाता है।
