A bridge over a river is a very common sight; not just in the mountains but also in urban areas. We invariably almost every day come across monstrous bridges over huge but calm rivers. Vehicles and pedestrians both use such bridges to cross overJwever, some people opt for various ferry services in the likes of launch, steamer as the rivers in cities are not intimidating. But, in the wilderness, where river always roars, crossing a tiny mountain stream becomes a tough task. I actually did cross a few like that barefooted, icy cold water kept my feet numb for long. For crossing bigger rivers, however, I couldn’t but resort to bridges. And I love walking on such simple narrow wooden bridges. With each foot step the log trembles and the entire bridge vibrates. When heavier creatures like yaks and horses cross such wooden bridges even shake. In most cases, like this bridge in the picture there is nothing your hands can hold on to and the space is too narrow for multiple people at one go. Only one can cross at a time…much like life, isn’t it? Crossing is mandatory but taking people along is a scary option.

I personally enjoy walking on this type of bridges. Being a trekker, I get such opportunity only once in a blue moon. But locals have to rely on these fragile structures all year long. Sometimes in the thick of monsoon the river swells and takes these weak bridges to pieces. And that causes a lot of troubles for villagers. They start building it again, this time a tighter, stronger one. Again, much like life, isn’t it? When you lose the bond you have built with so much of love and care you either get disheartened, fret at its torn pieces or you put in effort to build again. Just like a wooden bridge on a gushing river in a hilly village, human bonds are also indispensible. And, such bonds also wither away due to ignorance, mistrust, lack of care and love, affection and warmth. What actually bridges two souls? Similarity of interest, candid conversations, mutual respect and proper understanding of each other’s strength and limitations – these aspects bridge two souls and ensure that they exist as one.

This is why, when I see a bridge like this, I think of its purpose and how it can be related to our lives. These deeper implications might sound far-fetched but that’s how imagination runs, wild and wilder and smarter than the way than our brain can reason out things and events and people. A bridge, thus symbolizes a lot of things. Hope, assurance, security and most importantly certainty as it leads to the other side overcoming the impossible, helps us reach our desired destinations effortlessly and focus more on our paths rather than dealing with depths and wading though treacherous waves. Again, lot like life, isn’t it?

This upper Lamjunga campsite was by far the most intriguing campsite for me. In my relatively short trekking stint I have never been to any campsite as chilly and as unearthly stunning as this one. Only Thansing and Lamuney camps during trek can dare a rivalry but then again, they would have comprehensively been beaten by the unmatchingly charming upper Lamjunga campsite of Borasu Pass trek.

Not just its altitude (upper Lamjunga is so far the highest place with altitude well over 16000 feet where I spent a night), this camping ground got the crown for many other reasons. The proximity to final destination is one of the reasons. The pass not just allures but it does beckon obsessed trekkers like me and this campground makes it possible by offering sheer visibility. With mighty mountains all around this enchanting land was full of sludgy snow. Since we had no option but to billet there, we had to go through a tremendous night. A night so long that I thought it was longer than an entire day. The entire place was wide open and nipping bleak wind ripped us apart throughout. Snowflakes started in late afternoon mildly and gradually went from strength to strength. It was cold, simply put. It was biting cold, properly put. It was sense numbingly cold, honestly put.

The funny part was the surface wasn’t actually even where we bivouacked. That might not appear in this picture but it really was uneven and made us feel irritatingly funny about it. We all slept keeping our heads on the higher part of the slope and our feet were towards the lower part. While others did seem to be okay with that I found the gradient a bit steeper where I laid myself. The more I was trying to move up, the more I was sliding down. And with each effort, the massive layer of snow was sending a Siberia-like chill down to my spine. Even though my yellow mattress was the thickest among all it proved to be a mere toy in the hands of the wanton snows. It was so horribly hilarious! I remained curled inside my sleeping bag till next morning and all this while I thought I would freeze to death. Somehow I survived that night and went outside when the dawn breaks. The campsite looked even more enigmatic with a shinning s**t of ice shimmering in the morning sun.

Off we went then leaving the campsite behind and when I was climbing up the pass, I turned a few times back which is very unlike me as I knew I will never be back there again in my life. Upper Lamjunga was, as if contemplating the fact that I was there in her arms for a few brief hours and I tried to love her in spite of her imperfections, ignoring her harsh blows, focusing solely on her magnificent shows and left a few whispering words that till now only she knows.
