A team of 10 international climbers, including renowned mountaineer Nims Dai (Nirmal Purja), went missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak (8,051 m) in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. The expedition included climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, the United States, Oman, and China.

The Valley of Flowers Trek is one of India’s most beautiful Himalayan treks, located in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, inside the Valley of Flowers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

TREK HIGHLIGHTS

* Starting point: Govindghat
* Base camp: Ghangaria
* Destination: Valley of Flowers National Park
* Altitude: Approximately 3,658 m (12,000 ft)
* Trek distance: Around 38 km round trip from Govindghat (including Ghangaria)
* Duration: 4–6 days
* Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

BEST TIME TO VISIT

* July to September
* Peak bloom is usually from late July to mid-August, when thousands of alpine flowers are in full bloom.

WHAT YOU ‘LL SEE

* Over 500 species of alpine flowers
* Snow-capped Himalayan peaks
* Waterfalls, streams, and glaciers
* Rare wildlife such as the Himalayan monal, musk deer, and, on rare occasions, the snow leopard.
