The story of Bairas Kund (or Bairaskund) is a fascinating blend of severe devotion, mythology, and the deep-rooted history of the Himalayas. Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, near Nandprayag, it is primarily famous as the site where Ravana, the king of Lanka, performed his most intense penance to Lord Shiva.
1. The Legend of Ravana's Penance
According to the Skanda Purana (Kedarkhand), Bairas Kund is the sacred spot where Ravana meditated for thousands of years to please Lord Shiva. 🗻🗻🗻🗻🕉️🕉️🕉️🕉️🕉️
* The Sacrifice: To prove his absolute devotion, Ravana offered his heads as a sacrifice. One by one, he cut off nine of his heads and offered them into the Yagna Kund (fire pit).
* The Boon: As he was about to sacrifice his tenth and final head, Lord Shiva appeared, moved by his extreme austerity. Shiva restored his heads and granted him several boons, including immense strength and wisdom.
* Dasholi: Because this is where Ravana offered his ten heads (Das-moli), the entire surrounding region came to be known as Dasholi.
2. Significant Myths & Features
The site is not just a temple but a place where physical "remnants" of these legends are believed to exist:
* The Ancient Kund: The fire pit where Ravana is said to have performed the Havan (sacrifice) still exists near the temple.
* Fingerprints of Ravana: Local lore suggests that some rocks in the area bear the marks of Ravana's fingerprints from when he tried to lift the Earth or perform his rituals.
* The Composition of Shiva Strotram: It is widely believed that Ravana composed the famous Shiva Tandava Stotram and parts of the Ravana Samhita (a book on astrology and medicine) at this very location.
