Ek island jaha ladko ki shaadi unki weaving skills pe depend karti hai. 🧶

Yaha ladke bachpan se hi, 6-8 saal ki age se knitting seekhna shuru kar dete hain. Aur ye sirf ek skill nahi, unki maturity aur marriage-readiness ka proof hai.

Kuch cheezein jo mujhe sabse zyada fascinate kar gayi:

🧵 Chullo (cap) unki relationship status batata hai — red matlab married, white matlab single, aur black matlab wo community ke head hain

🧵 Ladkiyon ka apna code hai — bright colours (yellow, white, pink) single hone ka signal hai, dark colours married hone ka
🧵 Sabse touching part — married mard jo waistband pehente hain, wo unki wife khud unke liye bunti hai, apne kuch baal bhi usme daal ke. Literally apna ek hissa kisi ke liye weave karna, is se pyaara love token maine kahin nahi dekha

Aur jab yeh log dance aur music perform karte hain, poora island jhoom uthta hai 🎶

2005 mein UNESCO ne bhi Taquile ke textile art ko “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage” declare kiya tha — itni deep hai yaha ki craft aur tradition ki jadein.

Aise culture jo sirf dekhne se nahi, samajhne se pata chalte hain.

Ye hai Taquile Island, Lake Titicaca (Peru) — duniya ki highest navigable lake ke andar basa hua. 📍

I landed in a city where I knew nobody.

A stranger drove 3 hours round-trip just to pick me up.

What happened over the next 24 hours reminded me why I travel.

Middle of the night.
Unknown city.
Unknown country.

A man I’d never met before
drove 1.5 hours to pick me up from the airport.

Then another 1.5 hours
to his mother’s house.

I didn’t know what to expect.

She welcomed me with chicken,
rice and homemade salsa.

The next morning,
the best strawberry milkshake I’ve ever had.

Then he showed me the Pacific Ocean.

Then breakfast with his friends.

At this point, I was asking myself…

Why are complete strangers treating me like family?

And this story gets even crazier…

Part 2 Tomorrow!
