Everest isn’t the biggest mountain. It depends on how you measure it.

Mount Everest is the world’s highest mountain above sea level, standing at 8,848.86 metres. But mountain height can be measured in different ways — and when you change the measurement, the answer changes too.

In this mountain comparison, we look at:

1. Mount Everest — Highest above sea level
8,848.86 m

2. Mauna Kea — Greatest base-to-summit height on Earth
More than 10.2 km from its underwater base to its summit.

3. Chimborazo — Farthest summit from Earth’s center
Its position near the equator places its summit farther from Earth’s center than Everest.

4. Olympus Mons — Giant mountain of Mars
Approximately 21–22 km high and around 600 km wide, making it the largest mountain in the Solar System.

So, which is the biggest mountain?

Everest is highest above sea level.
Mauna Kea is taller from base to summit.
Chimborazo is farthest from Earth’s center.
Olympus Mons dominates when we look beyond Earth.

The definition changes. The answer changes.

A glacier is not just a mass of ice.

It begins with fresh snow.

Over time, repeated snowfall, melting, refreezing and compaction transform fresh snow into névé. With further compression, névé becomes firn. Deeper burial and increasing pressure eventually transform firn into dense glacier ice.

And when enough ice accumulates, gravity causes it to deform and flow.

That moving mass of ice is a glacier.

SNOW → NÉVÉ → FIRN → GLACIER ICE → GLACIER

WHY CHOOSE TREKYAARI?

• Led by Sherpas with extensive 8,000m expedition experience
• Safe, acclimatization-focused itineraries
• Small expedition groups for personalized support
• Premium safety equipment and reliable expedition logistics
• Nutritious meals and comfortable stays
• End-to-end support from booking to summit

Every glacier has a story of snow, pressure, time and transformation.

The next time you step on glacier ice, remember what it took to get there.

Which term was new to you — Névé, Firn, or Glacier Ice?

The Death Zone is not just about altitude.

Above 8,000 metres, every breath becomes harder, recovery slows down, the cold becomes more dangerous, and the margin for error becomes extremely small.

The human body is not designed to stay at this altitude for long. That is why an 8,000m expedition demands more than physical strength. It demands experience, preparation, acclimatization and the right team around you.

WHY CHOOSE TREKYAARI?

• Experienced Sherpas with extensive 8,000m expedition experience
• Acclimatization-focused itineraries designed for safer altitude adaptation
• Small expedition groups for personalized guidance and support
• Professional high-altitude safety equipment and reliable expedition logistics
• Nutritious meals and carefully planned expedition support
• Experienced expedition leaders focused on safety, decision-making and summit strategy

At extreme altitude, the summit is only one part of the journey.

Knowing when to push.
Knowing when to pause.
And knowing when to descend.

That's what experience brings to the mountain.

Choose TrekYaari for your high-altitude expedition.
Climb with experienced Sherpas. Respect the mountain.

Congratulations to Mr. Sachin on successfully summiting Kang Yatse II with TrekYaari at 6,250 m!

Every summit is more than a photograph at the top.

It is the result of months of preparation, countless steps, changing weather, challenging terrain, and the determination to keep moving forward when the mountain tests you.

From the trails of Ladakh to standing on the summit of Kang Yatse II, Sachin’s journey is a reminder that reaching a high-altitude summit takes more than strength. It takes preparation, discipline, guidance, and the right team beside you.

What Sachin had to say:

Sachin

“Summiting Kang Yatse II at 6,250 meters was an experience I will never forget. The challenging terrain and high altitude tested me at every step, but the guidance and support from the TrekYaari team gave me the confidence to keep going. Standing on the summit after everything we went through made every effort worth it.”

14 peaks. All above 8,000 metres. One of mountaineering’s ultimate challenges.

But there’s a surprising catch.

Historically, 77 climbers were recognized for completing all 14 eight-thousanders. Under 8000ers.com’s verified “New Era” criteria, only 39 currently qualify.

The reason? Later research found that some historically accepted ascents stopped short of the true summits—particularly on Manaslu, Annapurna I, and Dhaulagiri.

At 8,000+ metres, even a few metres can change what counts as a summit.

Because in high-altitude mountaineering, reaching the mountain isn't enough. You have to reach the real summit.

Why choose TrekYaari?

• Experienced expedition leadership and high-altitude expertise
• Acclimatization-focused expedition planning
• Small groups for better guidance and support
• Professional safety equipment and expedition logistics
• Reliable support throughout the expedition
• End-to-end assistance from preparation to summit and safe return

Which of the 14 would you want to climb first? Tell us in the comments.

A glacier may look like a frozen landscape, but beneath that surface is a constantly moving world of ice, pressure, fractures, and hidden hazards.

From crevasses and snow bridges to seracs, moraines, firn, icefalls, and bergschrunds, every feature tells a story about how glaciers move and change.

Understanding these terms isn't just about knowing the mountain better—it can be the difference between recognizing a hazard and walking straight into one.

Here are some of the key glacier features every mountaineer should understand:

• Crevasse — Deep fractures formed as a glacier stretches and flows. Some are obvious; others can hide beneath fragile snow bridges.
• Snow Bridge — A layer of snow covering a crevasse that can look deceptively solid.
• Serac — Towering blocks of fractured glacier ice that can collapse with little warning.
• Moraine — Rock, gravel, and debris carried and deposited by a moving glacier, often creating loose and unstable terrain.
• Firn — Old, compacted snow that has survived at least one summer and is gradually transforming into glacier ice.
• Icefall — A steep, heavily fractured section of a glacier where the ice breaks into a chaotic maze of crevasses and seracs.
• Bergschrund — A large crevasse separating moving glacier ice from the more stationary snow and ice attached to the mountain above.

The mountain doesn't announce which section is dangerous.

You need to understand the terrain before you enter it.

Because in high-altitude mountaineering, knowledge isn't just useful—it is part of your safety system.

Why choose TrekYaari?

• Experienced expedition leadership and high-altitude expertise
• Acclimatization-focused itineraries
• Small groups for better guidance and support
• Professional safety equipment and expedition logistics
• Reliable support throughout the journey
• End-to-end assistance from preparation to summit and safe return

Every expedition starts with understanding the terrain.

Which glacier feature would you be most nervous to cross—a crevasse, serac, icefall, or bergschrund? Tell us in the comments.

The Himalayas are beautiful, but they are never predictable.

Every mountain has risks. The safest climbers aren't the strongest—they're the ones who understand the hazards before taking the first step.

Hidden crevasses beneath fresh snow, collapsing seracs, fragile cornices, avalanches, and rockfall are objective hazards that every mountaineer must respect. These dangers cannot be eliminated—only understood and managed.

Then come the subjective hazards: poor acclimatization, wrong route choices, ignoring weather forecasts, summit fever, and overconfidence. These are the risks created by human decisions, and they are often the most preventable.

The mountain doesn't care how experienced you are. It rewards preparation, patience, and good judgment.

Why choose TrekYaari?

• Led by experienced Sherpas with extensive 8,000-meter expedition experience.
• Safe, acclimatization-focused itineraries designed to improve summit success.
• Small expedition groups for personalized guidance and support.
• Premium safety equipment and dependable expedition logistics.
• Nutritious meals and comfortable accommodations throughout the journey.
• End-to-end support—from your first booking to the summit and your safe return.

Because every successful expedition begins long before the climb—it starts with choosing the right team.
