One of the best-known winter treks in India, Chadar Trek is as challenging as it is rewarding.
Known locally as Khaado Sanglam, this is a frozen river trail.
The Zanskar river freezes in winter and is blanketed in ice. That is where the name of the trek comes from: "chadar" or
"blanket
This arduous trek is for people who have solid trekking experience as the conditions are tough even if the frozen river and icefalls look like they belong in a picture book.
Temperatures drop to -25 degrees at night. The ice can be too thin and glassy in places. There are steep rocks and loose sand.
We begin in Leh. You'll need at least a day to acclimatise to avoid altitude sickness. On the third day, we will head to Bakula and camp at Shingra Koma. The next stop, after a 15km trek, is Tibb, known for its exquisite rock formations and caves. The river may be frozen but the sky will be clear, an azure blue during the day and star lit at night. After leaving Tibb, you will reach one of the highlights of the Chadar Trek: the frozen Nyerek waterfall.
In other words, this one is made for an adventurer's bucket list.
If that sounds like you, you've got to join this trek this winter.
The spans eight days but is the story of a lifetime.
Join us for the Chadar Trek in January and February.
