Ibrahim (peace be upon him) built the Holy Ka’bah with stones, and it was nine cubits high. The building was in the form of rows of stones one above the other without any adhesive substance. This type of building without mortar is called ‘radhman’ (رضماً).

The construction of the Holy Ka’bah in its present form is the building by Sultan Murad IV, one of the Ottoman Sultans in 1040 H. This same construction has been renovated by the Custodians of the Two Holy Mosques since, however restored to the original position.

The components are large bluish-black stones taken from Makkah Al-Mukarramah mountains, the most important of which is AI-Ka’bah mountain (also known as Jabal Maqla’ al-Ka’bah ‘Mountain of the Ka’bah Quarry’). These stones are referred to as “blue stone”.

The bricks are not equal in size; some are large, others small.

Musallah Jibreel: Where the Timings of Salah Were Taught

Near the Kabah, there is a specific spot known as Musallah Jibreel. It is not just a place, it is directly connected to how every Muslim in the world performs their daily prayers today.

This is believed to be the location where Angel Jibreel AS came to the Prophet ﷺ and taught him the exact timings of the five daily prayers. This event did not happen randomly. It came after the obligation of salah during Al-Isra wal-Mi’raj, when the five daily prayers were made fard upon the Ummah.

However, while the command to pray was given during that night journey, the details of when to pray were demonstrated later, here at this very place.

➡️What Exactly Happened Here?

Jibreel AS led the Prophet ﷺ in prayer over two consecutive days, and each day served a specific purpose.

- On the first day, he led every prayer at its earliest possible time:
- Fajr at the first light of dawn,
- Dhuhr just after the sun passed its peak,
- Asr when the shadow began to lengthen,
- Maghrib immediately after sunset,
- Isha when darkness had fully set in.

On the second day, he led the same prayers again, but this time at their latest permissible times.

After completing this, Jibreel AS said:

“The time for each prayer is between these two.”

This moment established the time windows (awqat) that every Muslim follows to this day.

Before this, the obligation of salah was known, but its precise timing structure was not yet demonstrated in practice.
