18/08/2026

As the sun sets over Ujjain, the Ram Ghat on the Shipra river transforms into one of the most spiritually charged and visually beautiful scenes in all of Madhya Pradesh. The evening Shipra Aarti here is Ujjain's answer to the Ganga Aarti of Haridwar — and for many devotees who have witnessed both, it carries an intimacy and depth that is entirely its own.

The Shipra river holds a place in Hindu cosmology second only to the Ganga itself. It is one of the seven sacred rivers of India and figures prominently in the Puranas and in the mythology surrounding Ujjain. A bath in the Shipra at Ujjain is considered enormously auspicious — and during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, held here every twelve years, tens of millions of pilgrims take the sacred dip in a gathering of human faith and devotion that has no parallel anywhere on earth.

The Ram Ghat itself is a beautifully maintained stepped riverbank ghat lined with ancient temples and small shrines. In the early morning, it is the site of a quieter but equally moving ritual — devotees bathing in the river before proceeding to the Mahakaleshwar Temple for darshan, the sound of conch shells and temple bells drifting across the still water as the sun rises.

Incredible Indian Tours includes the Ram Ghat Shipra Aarti in all our Ujjain tour packages from Delhi. Contact us for the latest deals.

Ram Ghat Ujjain experience:
— Evening Shipra Aarti ceremony

This week Incredible Indian Tours takes you to two of Madhya Pradesh's most compelling destinations — the ancient sacred city of Ujjain and the vibrant, food-obsessed metropolis of Indore.

Ujjain is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India — settlements here date back over 3,000 years, and the city's prominence as a centre of Hindu spirituality, Vedic scholarship, and astronomical science is without parallel. The ancient observatory Jantar Mantar at Ujjain — one of the few outside Delhi and Jaipur — reflects the city's historical role as the prime meridian of ancient Indian geography and the centre of classical Indian timekeeping.

Beyond Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain is home to a remarkable concentration of temples — the Harsiddhi Mata Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas; the beautiful Kal Bhairav Temple on the banks of the Shipra; the Chintaman Ganesh Temple; and the Ram Ghat where the evening Shipra Aarti is held each day in a ceremony that echoes the Ganga Aarti of Varanasi and Haridwar.

Indore, just 55 km away, is a city with an entirely different character — dynamic, entrepreneurial, and extraordinarily proud of its food. The Sarafa Bazaar night food market and the Chappan Dukan food street together constitute what many food writers consider the finest street food destination in India — a claim that, after one evening there, is very hard to dispute.

At Incredible Indian Tours, our complete Ujjain and Indore tour packages from Delhi cover both cities in depth. Contact us for the latest deals.

Week 14 highlights coming up:
— Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti

Happy Independence Day to every Indian, wherever you are in the world.

On this day in 1947, a nation of extraordinary complexity and extraordinary promise declared itself free. In the decades since, India has become something the world watches with fascination — a democracy of 1.4 billion voices, a civilisation thousands of years old still very much alive in its traditions, its languages, its festivals, and its art, and a country whose landscapes range from the highest mountains on earth to tropical rainforests, from tidal mangroves to cold deserts.

At Incredible Indian Tours, we have made it our life's work to share this country with the people who love it. We have taken families to the snow meadows of Kashmir, couples to the houseboat sunsets of Dal Lake, groups of friends to the white water rapids of Rishikesh, parents and children to the ghats of Haridwar at aarti time, and travellers from every corner of India to corners of their own country they had never seen before.

Every one of those journeys is a small act of knowing and loving India better. And that, we believe, is one of the finest ways to celebrate this day.

Jai Hind. Jai Bharat. Happy Independence Day 2026.

With warm wishes from all of us at Incredible Indian Tours — Bhavya and the entire team.

14/08/2026

If South Kolkata belongs to the colonial British legacy — Victoria Memorial, the Maidan, Park Street — then North Kolkata belongs to old Bengal itself: the merchant families, the zamindars, the reformers and poets who shaped the Bengal Renaissance and made Calcutta the intellectual capital of 19th-century Asia.

A walk through the lanes of North Kolkata — through neighbourhoods like Shyambazar, Jorasanko, Shovabazar and Sovabazar — is a journey through a cityscape that has changed remarkably little in 150 years. The streets are narrow and winding, flanked on both sides by the magnificent crumbling mansions of the old Bengali merchant aristocracy — their facades a riot of terracotta ornamentation, Corinthian columns, carved wooden balconies, and peeling layers of ochre and cream paint that reveal the decades beneath.

Jorasanko Thakur Bari — the ancestral home of the Tagore family and birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore, now preserved as the Rabindra Bharati Museum — is the cultural centrepiece of the walk. The museum's collection of Tagore's paintings, manuscripts, and personal belongings, housed in the rooms where he lived and worked, is deeply moving for anyone with an interest in Bengali or Indian literature and culture.

The Marble Palace — an extraordinary private mansion built in 1835 and filled with European art, statues, and antiques — and the Shovabazar Rajbari, where the first Durga Puja in Kolkata's aristocratic tradition was held, are among the other unmissable stops on the North Kolkata heritage walk.

Incredible Indian Tours includes a guided North Kolkata heritage walk in our complete Kolkata packages from Delhi. Contact us for the latest deals.

North Kolkata walk highlights:
— Jorasanko Thakur Bari — Tagore birthplace
— Marble Palace private mansion
— Shovabazar Rajbari heritage courtyard
— Zamindar mansion lane photography
— Local street food — jilipi and telebhaja

13/08/2026

Tucked into the narrow lanes of North Kolkata along the banks of the Hooghly river, Kumartuli — the potter's quarter — is one of the most extraordinary and absorbing neighbourhoods in any Indian city. This is where the magnificent clay idols of Durga, Kali, Saraswati, Lakshmi, and other deities are hand-sculpted each year by master artisans whose families have practised this craft for generations.

The process of creating a Durga Puja idol is a year-round endeavour in Kumartuli. It begins with the collection of sacred clay from the banks of the Hooghly, which is combined with straw and bamboo to build the internal armature of the idol. Layers of clay are then applied and shaped by hand over weeks — the goddess's face, her multiple arms, her lion, and the figures of Mahishasura being vanquished beneath her feet — until a towering, multi-figure composition emerges that can stand four to six metres high.

Visiting Kumartuli is one of the most genuinely immersive cultural experiences available in Kolkata. The narrow lanes are lined with open-fronted workshops where you can watch the sculptors at every stage of their work — shaping, smoothing, painting, and finally adorning the idols with fabric, jewellery, and elaborate ornamentation. The scale of what is produced here — thousands of idols each year for Durga Puja pandals across Kolkata and beyond — is staggering.

Incredible Indian Tours includes a Kumartuli walking tour in our complete Kolkata tour packages from Delhi. Contact us for the latest deals.

Kumartuli experience:
— Walk through the sculptor's lanes
— Watch clay idol-making process
— Photography of works in progress
— Meet master artisan families
— Understand Durga Puja traditions

12/08/2026

Stretching across 1.5 square kilometres in the heart of Kolkata, the Maidan is one of the largest urban open spaces in Asia — a vast expanse of green that serves simultaneously as the city's park, its sports ground, its political stage, and its most democratic public space.

The Maidan was created by the British in the 18th century to provide clear sightlines from Fort William — but over time it evolved into something far more significant: the lungs and the living room of Kolkata. On any given morning, tens of thousands of people use its open lawns — morning walkers, joggers, cricket teams, football clubs, yoga practitioners, and families enjoying the rare expanse of open air that the dense city rarely offers.

The Shaheed Minar — the obelisk memorial formerly known as Ocherlony Monument, built in 1828 — rises from the Maidan's northern edge as one of Kolkata's most recognisable landmarks, its Ottoman-inspired column watching over the park and the city. Fort William itself — still an active Indian Army cantonment — sits at the Maidan's western edge, its massive 18th-century earthwork fortifications still largely intact.

In the evening, the Maidan fills with food vendors, families, and visitors enjoying the cooler air and the extraordinary view of the Victoria Memorial glowing against the darkening sky. It is a truly Kolkata experience — unhurried, convivial, and deeply alive.

Incredible Indian Tours includes a Maidan morning walk and Victoria Memorial visit in all our Kolkata packages from Delhi. Contact us for the latest deals.
