The Elephanta Caves experience begins the moment you board the ferry at the Gateway of India — and the one-hour crossing of Mumbai Harbour is itself one of the finest things you can do in the city.

One of the most unexpected and charming heritage stops in all of Aurangabad is the Panchakki — a medieval water mill complex built in the 17th century CE as part of the Dargah of Hazrat Baba Shah Musafir, the revered Sufi saint whose shrine draws pilgrims from across Maharashtra and beyond.

The name Panchakki means water mill in Marathi — and the mill itself is an engineering marvel of the Mughal era. Water is channelled underground from a source several kilometres away and drops from a height through a concealed channel to emerge as a powerful jet that drives the large waterwheel, which was historically used to grind grain for the langar — the free community kitchen that fed thousands of pilgrims visiting the shrine each day.

The complex around the mill is one of the most peaceful and beautiful garden spaces in Aurangabad — a large tank fed by the underground spring, surrounded by old trees draped in shade, with the Mughal-era arched buildings of the dargah complex reflected in the still water. The atmosphere here — water, greenery, the gentle sound of the mill, and the spiritual energy of the Sufi shrine — is entirely different from the ancient stone grandeur of the caves and forts that dominate Aurangabad's heritage circuit, and provides a genuinely restful and moving counterpoint to the week's more monumental experiences.

Thirteen kilometres from Aurangabad on the road to Ellora, rising from the flat Deccan plain on a sheer 200-metre conical basalt hill, stands one of the most remarkable fortifications in the history of Indian military architecture — Daulatabad Fort.

Built originally by the Yadava dynasty in the 9th century CE as Devagiri, the fort's position on a near-vertical volcanic plug made it almost unassailable. The concentric rings of massive stone walls, deep water-filled moats, drawbridges, and the infamous dark tunnel approach — a deliberately disorienting passage through the rock designed to confuse any attacking force — made Daulatabad one of the most ingeniously defended positions in medieval India.

The fort's most extraordinary episode came in 1327 CE when Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq ordered his entire Delhi capital relocated here — over 1,100 km south — in one of the most ambitious and ultimately catastrophic exercises of imperial will in Indian history. The capital was moved back within years, but the fort remained strategically vital through the Bahmani Sultanate, Nizam Shahi and Mughal periods. The magnificent Chand Minar — a 30-metre tower built in 1435 CE — stands near the fort's base as one of the finest examples of Deccan Sultanate architecture in Maharashtra.

The outer and inner walls of the Kailash Temple are covered from base to ceiling in high-relief sculptural panels that represent some of the finest narrative stone carving in the history of Indian art. The famous panel of Ravana shaking Mount Kailash — the demon king straining with all his twenty arms while Shiva pins him down with a single toe as Parvati watches in serene confidence — is a masterpiece of dramatic narrative carving that has been celebrated by art historians worldwide. The Shiva Nataraja panels, the Gajalakshmi reliefs, and the scenes from the Mahabharata in the colonnade galleries all demonstrate a sculptural tradition at its absolute creative peak.
