Set on a private island in Kerala’s backwaters, Philipkutty’s Farm offers an authentic homestay experience, distinct from traditional hotels. Accessible only by country boat across Lake Vembanad, the farm is owned and managed by Anu and her family. The property features private waterfront villas furnished with antiques, each designed for comfort and privacy, and set within a lush coconut and rubber plantation.

Guests can start their day with birdsong and lake breezes, enjoy home-cooked Kerala cuisine prepared with organic farm produce, and explore the estate’s working rubber plantation. Activities include guided walks through coconut groves and rubber trees, along with peaceful boat rides on scenic canals, providing a genuine experience of Kerala’s natural beauty and warm hospitality.

"During my own visit, I was welcomed with open arms into the life of the farm. Meals turned into lively storytelling sessions, and quiet moments among the palms left me with a deep sense of belonging—an experience of comfort and authenticity we strive to share with every traveler who visits Philipkutty’s Farm." - Nishant Kalra

[Debuts & Discoveries - A Section From Our Newsletter May 2025]

Athulya Paper Studio, part of Srishti Trust in Munnar, Kerala, is a unique initiative that crafts eco-friendly, wood-free paper products using recycled materials like banana fiber, tea waste, and even elephant dung!

Founded in 1991 as a vocational training center for differently-abled youth, it now employs nearly 40 artisans, empowering them with skills and dignified livelihoods. The studio produces stunning items like diaries, gift boxes, lampshades, and branded paper bags for companies like Starbucks and Kitco. Their process is sustainable, involving soaking, beating, and sun-drying natural fibers, with zero waste.

Natural items like marigold petals, eucalyptus leaves, and lemongrass give the products bright colors and textures, keep bugs away, and make them chemical-free. Athulya’s smart way of working helps the environment and supports people with disabilities by turning waste into beautiful creations. Their handmade products, like diaries and gift boxes, are sold in local shops and online, spreading eco-friendly ideas and including everyone.

[Bonnes Adresses - A Section From Our Newsletter May 2025]

The Bangala offers a real taste of local history and culture. Once a private club from the early 1900s, this lovely heritage hotel was opened in 1998 by the Meyyappan family. It keeps its old colonial style with stone walls, wide porches, green gardens, and a nice pool. The 33 comfortable rooms mix antique furniture and traditional tiled floors with modern features like AC and Wi-Fi.

The Bangala is famous for its delicious Chettinad food, served on banana leaves, and is one of India’s best restaurants. Guests enjoy cooking classes to learn about spices and traditional recipes, sometimes in French. You can relax with yoga, read in the library, play billiards, or get a massage. Guided tours visit old mansions, temples, and local markets. The nearby antiques market offers unique Chettinad treasures like carved furniture, brassware, jewelry, and vintage tiles, with guides sharing their history, perfect for finding special keepsakes.

Akshayakalpa Organic Farm in Chengalpattu, a short 90 km trip from Chennai! This 21-acre farm is a lively place where nature flourishes and they process a huge 40,000 liters of milk every day. It's more than just a farm; it's a place to truly learn. Our last group had an amazing time, getting hands-on with farm life. They enjoyed bullock cart rides, learned how to milk cows, peered into honeybee hives, and even made fun leaf toys. They also discovered the secrets of organic gardening and how the farm utilizes clever methods, such as biogas, to remain sustainable.

This unique experience perfectly blends traditional methods with new, eco-friendly approaches, showcasing exactly how their pure, chemical-free food is sourced from the farm to your table. Our discoverers left feeling incredibly connected to nature and inspired by the dedication that supports over 1,200 farmers.

Experience of the Month : The Ooty Toy Train

The Ooty Toy Train, officially known as the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, offers a charming five-hour journey from Mettupalayam (330 m) to Ooty (2,200 m), winding through the lush Nilgiri Hills on India’s only rack-and-pinion railway. Built in 1908, this vintage train climbs steep slopes with steam and diesel engines, passing through 16 tunnels, over 250 bridges, and around 208 sharp curves, while showcasing scenic tea gardens, forests, and misty valleys.

Passengers can hop off at quaint hill stations like Coonoor, Wellington, and Lovedale to stretch their legs and sample local snacks. The slow pace, panoramic views, and nostalgic carriages make this ride a favorite for families, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a unique and memorable way to experience the beauty of the Nilgiris.
