Australia has launched an Online Visa Pilot Programme to make it easier for Indian business and tourism visitors to apply for an online visa. Though it has been launched on a trial basis, it covers online lodgement of subclass 600 visas for Indian business and tourism visitors. It will be rolled out through selected travel agents across India. As per the Tourism 2020 programme of Australian Government, India has the potential to contribute between 1.9 billion US dollars and 2.3 billion US dollars annually to tourism industry by 2020. This is the reason that the Australian Government has rolled out a trial of online visa applications to capitalise this rapidly growing visitor market and create jobs.

66% feel safe in

In a survey conducted by MakeMyTrip to analyse the behavior and needs of women-travellers in India, 66% Indian women travellers reported “feeling safe travelling in India”, as against just 49% last year. These women also strongly advocated for solo travel. 52% respondents said they have experienced solo-leisure travel (compared to 44% last year). Of these, 49% have travelled solo in India. Almost 8% respondents said they preferred to take solo trips over travelling with a group, friends, or family. When quizzed on whether they felt safe travelling in India or overseas, 93% women responded “It depends on the destination and not the country”. The survey findings reflect the increasing confidence and spirit of adventure in Indian women travellers.

Women across age-groups are increasingly taking to travelling in all-women group of friends or even with strangers to destinations both within and outside India. The survey showed that 51% respondents had travelled in an all-women group (compared to 43% last year). Interest-based travel is also emerging as a growing segment. 20% of the respondents had traveled to Australia/New Zealand to catch the World Cup live.

reforms to give 7.5% boost to in #2015

Buoyed by visa reforms the Indian tourism industry will grow by 7.5% in 2015, according to World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). In 2014, the industry contributed Rs 764,200 crore and 36.7 million jobs to the Indian economy. Research released by World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) forecasts that the industry’s GDP contribution will grow by 7.5% and employment by 1.8% this year. “This demonstrates the sector’s enduring ability to generate economic growth and create jobs at a faster rate than the national economy, which is due to grow by 6.7% in 2015,” the report says. By the end of 2015, the travel & tourism sector will contribute Rs 821,500 crore, 7% of India’s GDP, and 37.4 million jobs, almost 9% of total employment, once all direct, indirect and induced impacts are taken into account.

“The strong increase in the size of the travel and tourism industry in India is fueled by visa reforms introduced in November 2014, which expanded the visa-on-arrival (VOA) scheme to 43 nationalities. Visitors from those countries no longer have to queue up at local consulates but can instead apply for visas online,” the report reveals. WTTC president and CEO David Scowsill says, “India is one of the biggest travel and tourism economies in the world contributing significantly to economic wealth and job creation. Much needed reforms to its visas rules will provide the foundation for very strong growth in the sector during 2015.”

Russians topped the list of foreign tourists to Goa with 1,89,486 Russians landing in state in 2014. According to statistics published in the Economic Survey of Goa 2014-15, tourists from Britain formed the second biggest contingent of tourists to the beach state. While 1,89,486 Russians landed in Goa in 2014, Britain accounted for 1,29,901 followed by Germans (33,942).

According to the report, over 5.1 lakh tourists from nearly 30 countries landed in Goa in 2014. Goa’s tryst with Russian tourists started in 2003 when the first charter flight from Russia flew into the state known as one of best beach tourism destinations in the country. Goa’s conventional tourist season starts in October and winds up in March when the mild winter sun works as a good break for travellers from Russia, Britain and Germany from their own harsh winter. Three million tourists visit Goa annually, nearly half a million of which are foreigners.
