Why is aircraft fuel mainly stored inside the wings?
Most people think the answer is simple:
“Because there’s empty space inside the wings.”

Modern aircraft wings contain structural spaces that can be designed as integral fuel tanks, helping preserve fuselage space for passengers, baggage and cargo.

During flight, aerodynamic forces bend the wings upward.
But the weight of fuel distributed inside the wings acts downward.
