Cannabis Use During Pregnancy Associated With Genetic Changes in Baby Brains
****************
Exposure to cannabis while pregnant has been linked with a number of genetic changes in the newborn, supporting speculations a mother's use of the drug could adversely affect their child's ongoing neurodevelopment.

The international team of researchers behind the study found that prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) was associated with alterations in genetic expression in newborns which persisted into their adult life. These epigenetic changes affected more than half a dozen genes related to the growth of nervous pathways at different points in development.

Scientists Discovered a Heightened Toxicity Risk For Children With Autism

***************
The number of people being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder ( ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD) has risen sharply in recent decades, and research continues to look at factors involved in these conditions.

A study revealed there's a difference in how children with autism or ADHD clear the common plastic additive bisphenol A (BPA), compared to neurotypical children.

BPA is used in a lot of plastics and plastic production processes, and can also be found inside food and drink cans. However, previous research has also linked it to health issues involving hormone disruption, including breast cancer and infertility.

Researchers from Rowan University and Rutgers University in the US looked at three groups of children: 66 with autism, 46 with ADHD, and 37 neurotypical kids. In particular, they analyzed the process of glucuronidation, a chemical process the body uses to clear out toxins within the blood through urine.

Owning a Cat Could Double Your Schizophrenia Risk, Research Suggests

****************

Having a cat as a pet could potentially double a person's risk of schizophrenia-related disorders, according to a recent study.
Australian researchers conducted an analysis of 17 studies published during the last 44 years, from 11 countries including the US and the UK.
"We found an association between broadly defined cat ownership and increased odds of developing schizophrenia-related disorders," explained psychiatrist John McGrath and fellow researchers, all from the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research, in their study published last December.
This idea that cat ownership could be linked to schizophrenia risk was proposed in a 1995 study, with exposure to a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii suggested as a cause. But the research so far has put forth mixed conclusions.

Brain goop that traps hunger neurons drives obesity

***"**""****"""""""******
A mechanism for metabolic disease is traced to a defective cellular scaffolding that holds together the brain’s hunger cells.
Neurons (artist’s illustration) that affect hunger lose their ability to sense insulin when encased by a sticky scaffolding
A build-up of sticky goo that traps neurons in an appetite-control centre in the brain has been implicated in worsening diabetes and obesity, according to research on mice
The goo also prevents insulin from reaching brain neurons that control hunger. Inhibiting production of the goo led mice to lose weight, experiments found. These findings points to a new driver of metabolic disorders and could help scientists to identify targets for drugs to treat these conditions.

Menstruation's Effect on Sports Performance Isn't Quite What We Expected
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Female athletes have faster reaction times and make fewer errors when they have their period – even though they feel their performance suffers compared to other phases of their menstrual cycle, new research suggests.
Kidney Disease, Dialysis, and Your Eyes
************
Eye problems can happen without any warning signs, even if you have late stage kidney disease or kidney failure. High blood pressure and diabetes can also increase your risk for eye disease. Therefore, it’s very important to ask your nephrologist (kidney doctor) about your eyes and if you should see an eye doctor (either an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor who specializes in eye diseases and eye surgery, or, an optometrist, a doctor of optometry, who can do eye exams and vision tests, prescribe glasses, and, find and treat certain eye diseases). If you have diabetes, you should see an ophthalmologist regularly. Not taking care of your eyes can lead to a medical emergency or permanent blindness. The good news is that if you take care of problems early, you can save your eyesight.
