This is Khapsey, a delightful fold of maida and sugar that’s typically made around Losar time in every home. A group of women help each other on a rotational basis so that the work doesn’t get too much for one person. Khapsey is first offered to the Gods on the first day of Losar, and then kept as a snack for every guest who comes home. If you’re coming to the Gathering, you’ll learn how to make this for yourself!

Sangti Valley is home to one of the wintering sites of the Black-Necked Crane, a migratory bird that has been classified as vulnerable on the IUCN list. The bird is largely threatened by high tension wires, loss of habitat, increasing urbanisation and activities like paragliding. After two years of not coming to the valley, the bird came back in 2018 and we have been lucky to see it this year as well! We are committed to increasing awareness about this glorious bird, and doing what we can to make them come back to the valley in all their glory.

We spent time with a monk and his apprentice learning the traditional art of flag printing. The ink used to print the flag is made out of powdered charcoal and the juice of the bark of the Sep Sheng tree. You spread it evenly over the carved wooden stamps using a brush, and then gently place handmade paper over the block and press down. Once the ink transfers, lift it and let it dry for a couple of minutes.

This pattern is known as a Zungdui, which is primarily made into a locket and used for protection. Come print your own flags this Losar at the Monyul Gathering!

This is Awoo Wangdi, one of two people in Sangti who still practice the art of bamboo weaving. He’s been practising for the last 25 years. The he uses is 8-9 months old, and found from the forests around Sangti. At the MonYul Gathering, you have the chance to learn this craft for yourself!
