Missed often on the usual tourist circuit, Diu is a small island in the Union Territory of Daman and Diu.

Diu is a melting pot of cultures, considered one of the most important and strategic points for its lucrative trade, centuries before the Portuguese even arrived.

Later on the Portuguese in Diu relied heavily on Hindu, Muslim, and Parsi merchants who formed a strong socio-economic group. The architecture of the town bore witness to the aspects of multiculturalism that evolved in Diu.

As you pass by and explore, you'll notice that while these groups had their own streets and zones, they all lived harmoniously within the fortified town.

Swipe to see some of the unmissable elements of Diu! 👉

Meet Purnima Rathod, a resident of Diu and a self driven young girl who seemlessly manages our business operations. Other than being a graduate in Bachelor's of Commerce, she is a young and enthusiastic personality who enjoys connecting with people.

Her keen interest in travelling and interacting with people is something we adore about her. She is fun to be with and a major foodie as she enjoys trying new food outlets every weekend.

If you have been on any of our experiences in Diu, you have definitely spoken to her for booking Diu Heritage Walks.

If not, then reach out to +917862844969 for booking Diu Heritage Walks.

Tower of Silence, Diu.

A Dakhma, also known as a Tower of Silence, is a circular, raised structure built by Zoroastrians for excarnation, in order to avert contamination of the soil and other natural elements by the dead bodies. Carrion birds, usually vultures and other scavengers, consume the flesh. Skeletal remains are gathered into a central pit where further weathering and continued breakdown occurs.

Architectural ornamentation of Havelis is typically focused around doorways or windows. A great variety of decorative motifs, including rosettes, lotus leaves and other floriated designs, animate the surfaces of these heavy wooden structures. For inspiration architects and artisans drew upon sources within Africa and across the Indian Ocean.

These are some of the common architectural elements you'd notice while strolling through the lanes of Old town in Diu.

Can you name more elements found in the Old town besides these?

Do leave your comments.

Diu is a vibrant multicultural city where you find people belonging to different communities. It is also home to one of the grandest wonders of the Portuguese era. When you walk down the Old town of Diu, this Haveli Facade is a common site to pass by. What makes this architecture special is the Swahili influences that it carries from it's maritime trade.

As you pass by these various settlements, one cannot help but notice that while the different communities settled in a segregated manner on specific streets and zones, they lived harmoniously with all the other communities within the fortified structure.

Have you noticed this facade on your walk past the Haveli Quarters?

One of the union territories of India, Diu has a strong Portuguese influence, visible through its various heritage buildings, churches, forts, memorials and more. One of them is Firangiwada, a little hamlet in Diu that was once inhabited by foreigners.

In Firangiwada, one of the prominent installations is the statue in the garden of the Collector’s office. This bronze statue, in the garden of the then Governor’s palace in Diu, is one of the very few Portuguese monuments to have survived till date. It belongs to the first Governor of Diu, Nuno da Cunha.

Join us on our Firangiwada Heritage Walk to unravel the fascinating story behind the statue and more.

Once upon a time, the pathways of Diu would only hear the rhythm of pedals as the indigenous weavers would be weaving their craft. But today the chuckle of the handloom comes only from one house called Vijay Lisboa Tecelagem.

Vijay Cumaldas is the last weaver of Diu, representative of the weaving knowledge of the Vanza community.

The social fabric of Diu would be incomplete without the Vanza community, who are traditional weavers and the Vaniya trading community took their creations across the mighty sea.

The long history of Diu’s weaving community awaits you. Join the Diu Heritage Walks with Make It Happen and unravel the real essence of Diu.
