Uluppuni, a breezy hilltop in Idukki district, Kerala, India, is the ideal spot for your next one-day escape into nature. This secluded place, perhaps the best meadowlands of Kerala, offers a refuge, to wind down and catch a deep breath in the chilly valley-winds.

Uluppuni, located near Vagamon, is one of the most celebrated destinations in Idukki–Kottayam border, stretching in a never-ending ocean of entrancing meadows and tranquil viewpoints. The Kulamavu Dam, situated 7 kms away in Periyar River, is another attraction.

One of the best off-road trails in Kerala, Uluppuni offers more engaging experiences as you trek uphill. It promises an exhilarating experience with its breathtaking view of green hills and blue reservoirs.

Early mornings are the ideal time to climb the hills. It is a mystical experience to watch the sunrise above the hills, amidst the rolling clouds, as you are caressed by the fog carried by the breeze in the valley.

Uluppuni is located 10 kms from Vagamon. From Vagamon, you can reach Uluppuni by taking Pullikkanam-Elappara Road. The other route is from Moolamattam which is a completely off-road route. Most four-wheelers would not reach the destination point, but a little trekking is always fun, isn’t it?

The proximate reason for the establishment of Kurisumala Ashram was John Mahieu’s (later Francis Acharya) response to this divine call. Though a Belgium by birth, the seeds of his vocation, which culminated in the oblation of his life at Kurisumala as a true Indian, were sown by none other than the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. This took place during the days of the round-table conference in London, where John was a student at that time.

After making profession at the Cistercian (Trappist) monastery in Scourmont, Belgium, he followed a persistent call to India and set foot in this “cradle of monasticism” in 1955. After an extensive ‘stay-and-study’ at major Indian Ashrams, he had a short stay with the founders of Saccidanandaj Ashram (Shantivanam) in Tiruchirappalli. Eventually, he accepted the invitation of Zacharias Mar Athanasios, the then Bishop of the Syro-Malankara Diocese of Tiruvalla, and officially established Kurisumala Ashram near Vagamon on March 21, 1958, in the company of Fr. Bede Griffiths, an English Benedictine monk, and a couple of aspirants.

The Spathodea trees (African tulip) is commonly found in most of the hillstations in Kerala like Vagamon and Munnar.Spathodea is not just a tree it is having a history to boast about

Spathodea, native to Africa, was planted by the British as an effective way to control mosquitoes when malaria claimed the lives of many estate workers during the initial stages of tea-planting. The cup-shaped flowers hold water and dew during the rainy and winter seasons.

The nectar of its flowers attracts flies and mosquitoes, which are trapped inside them as the nectar has adhesive property. Europeans planted the trees worldwide because of their resplendent red flowers and ability mosquito control.
