According to Buddhist tradition, Guru Padmasambhava—Guru Rinpoche—blessed the lake after local people struggled to find water during the freezing winter. It is believed that a portion of the lake once remained unfrozen, making its water a symbol of blessing, purity, protection and life.

Deep inside the sacred forest of Kabi Lungchok, an ancient story of compassion, gratitude and still lives.

According to Sikkim’s traditional narrative, Khye Bumsa approached the respected Lepcha leader Thekong Tek carrying a deeply personal prayer. What began with a blessing eventually became something greater—a sacred oath of brotherhood between the and communities, with Khangchendzonga as their witness.
