IMPORTANCE OF PINDA DAN (Obituary)
This is the belief that after the death, soul of human being still remain in this materialistic world. Just because of the loss of body (due to death, natural or unnatural) someone can not detach himself/ herself from this world. The pull of Love, kindness, affection for his / her family, friends, relatives etc. and the affinity for the materialistic world prevent him to go for the extreme and ultimate departure. As a result, being a bodiless state that Man or Woman (without body) gets pain and wonder here and there aimlessly. He wants to do many things but can not. They can not or even do not want to make themselves free from this materialistic world. 'PINDA DAAN' according to Hindu Belief Gives them an ultimate relief and paves the way for their departure to the ultimate world of Peace.
WHY TO PERFORM
Pinda Dan (obituary) is the worship of Lord Vishnu for petitioning The Lord for His protection of one's ancestors. According to the Vedic culture every child, and specifically the eldest son or child, should undertake this Pinda Dan worship of Lord Vishnu. The child's responsibility is to seek Lord Vishnu's mercy, that He may intercede for the alleviation and remission of sins and karmic burden the deceased parents may have incurred of up bringing children. In many cases it is also happened that if someone is died unnaturally (unnatural death due to accident, su***de, murder or get killed) then his/her unsatisfied spirit can not go to the super natural world (his / her "Atma" i.e. soul do not get 'Mukti' - freedom) and comes to this materialistic world again and again and sometimes try to frighten people in many ways. And then it is required to offer "Pindas" (Pinda Daan) for him or her. On Getting 'Pindas' generally that unsatisfied spirit is spiritually satisfied, leaves "Maya" i.e. affinity for this materialistic world and get the freedom ('Mukti'). Pls. note that "PINDA DAAN" is a very old and very effective process to clear the way so that the departed soul of the dead man or woman get freedom from the affinity to this living materialistic world and can move towards the ultimate ... ... divine destination.
WHERE TO PERFORM
Gaya is extremely Holy place for offering of Pindas. Pindas are offered in personalized way on your behalf on the Foot print of Lord Vishnu, the River Falgu, & Bodhgaya & last day on Akshya Bat and beside maintaining proper Hindu religious customs so that the Departed soul of the Dead persons rest in peace permanently.
HISTORY OF GAYA
According to Hindu Epic, Vayupuran, titled Gaya Mahatam, when creating mankind, Brahma created a demon named Gayasur. The demon went atop the kolahal Mountain and offered great penance to Lord Vishnu. Pleased with Gayasur, Lord Vishnu asked him to seek one blessing. So,Gayasur requested that whoever came in touch with him - be it an angel or a demon, an insect, a sinner, a saint or a sage, or an evil spirit - should find
salvation after having been purified of all sins. From that day everyone who came in touch with him found salvation and proceeded to vaikunth (abode of Lord Vishnu)."
In the Kurmpuran, 34/7-8, it is said:
"All forefathers appreciate a pilgrimage to Gaya by their successors. Once the pind daan is performed in Gaya, one achieves salvation. One becomes free of rebirth. If one visits Gaya even once and offers pind daan, the forefathers become free from hell and other dreadful destinations and achieve salvation."
In the Kurmpuran it is also said that whoever goes to Gaya for pind daan is blessed and seven generations from the paternal and maternal side are benefited along with the personal self who achieves salvation.
WHO PERFORMED
It is believed that it was Lord Brahma who first performed the pind daan ceremony in Gaya. Since then this tradition has continued. Offering pind daan during the dark fortnight of Ashvin is of special significance. Symbolically a pind is a round ball made of a mixture of wheat and rice flour with some sesame seeds mixed along with some milk and honey. Seven balls are made out of 100 grams of flour. Of these, one is offered to the deceased and the rest to others as desired.
Anybody can offer PINDAS for their forefathers i.e. for his / her Father, Mother, Grand Father, Grand Mother and also for brothers or Sisters or for anyone else who died Naturally or Unnaturally. It is offered for the salvation of yourself. History says that Lords Rama alongwith his wife Sita came here & performed obituary for his father Dasharath, whose death was unnatural. After offering Pinda Dan at Gaya, The soul of Dasharath get ultimate world of Peace.
