📷 Chattikona Wednesday Market / Odisha

We visited the Chattikona Wednesday market to meet the Dongria Kondh, who live in the hills of the Niyamgiri range in southern Odisha.

The name “Dongria Kondh” means “Kondh people of the forest,” and they hold the Niyamgiri hills sacred as a “mother mountain” where their deity resides.
As visitors are not allowed to enter their villages, opportunities to meet them are limited.
Their distinctive style—white cloth wrapped around the waist, nose rings and necklaces—is striking.
Many women also wear hairpins and even small knives tucked into their hair.

The market is lively, with stalls selling accessories, daily goods, and fish.
Among them, the small metal crafts known as Dokra, made using the lost-wax casting technique, stand out for their warm, handmade character☺️💛

ナマステ！西遊インディアです🙏
オディシャ州南部、ニヤマギリの山あいに暮らすドングリア・コンド族に会いに、チャティコナの水曜市へ。
ドングリア・コンドは「森に住むコンド」という意味を持ち、ニヤマギリの山を神が宿る“母なる山”として大切にして暮らしています。
外国人が村に立ち入ることは許されないため、彼らに会うチャンスは限られています。

白い布を腰に巻いた独特の装いに、鼻輪や首飾り。髪にはヘアピンや小さなナイフを差し込むスタイルも独特です。
市場にはアクセサリーや日用品、魚などが並び、とてもにぎやか。ロストワックス法（ロウを利用した鋳造）で作られるドクラの小さな金属工芸品は、手仕事の温もりを感じます☺️💛

📷 Lanjia Saura village / Odisha
Today is the new moon🌑
In India, there are various traditions of praying for ancestors, including the Hindu observance of Amavasya🪔

These photos were taken in Rezintal village, home to the Lanjia Saura tribe, during our Odisha tour.
They worship ancestral spirits and offer prayers as part of their daily lives.

The wall paintings known as Ittal in the shaman’s house are considered sacred,
believed to be the dwelling place of ancestors and spirits.
In front of them, offerings such as alcohol and food are placed, along with hanging umbrellas.
These umbrellas are said to be for the spirits to use when it rains.

The paintings depict scenes of village life as well as ancestors.
You can even spot trains and cars—symbols meant to help the spirits of those who passed away far from home return to the village.
Through these expressions, you can sense how this ancient belief continues to live on in the present day.

今日は新月🌑
インドではヒンドゥー教のアマーヴァスヤをはじめ、さまざまな形で祖先に祈る風習があります🪔

写真は、オディシャ州のツアーで訪れたランジア・ソウラ族のレジンタル村。彼らは祖先の精霊を信仰し、日々の暮らしの中で祈りを捧げています。

シャーマンの家の壁に描かれる「イディタル」は、祖先や精霊が宿るとされる神聖な絵。その前には酒や供物が供えられ、傘も吊り下げられています。この傘は、雨の際に精霊が使えるようにと置かれたものだそうです。

描かれるのは村の暮らしや祖先たち。中には電車や車もあり、遠くで亡くなった祖先の霊がそれに乗って帰ってこられるように、という意味が込められているそう。こうした表現からも、信仰が今の暮らしの中に息づいていることが感じられます！

Report from Tiger Safari Tour!🐅
📷 Ranthambore National Park

Located in Rajasthan, Ranthambore National Park is one of India’s most famous tiger reserves, once used as a royal hunting ground by the Maharajas.

The dry season (March–May) is the best time to visit, as animals gather around water sources.
These photos show a mother Bengal tiger and her cubs we encountered on our tour 🐅

We were lucky to watch them up close—resting by the water and letting out big, sleepy yawns. Truly a special moment! 🥰✨

📷 Ritual of the Lanjia Saura tribe / Odisha

We visited a village of the Lanjia Saura tribe in the hills of Odisha.
They worship ancestral spirits, and we witnessed a ritual where a shaman communicates with them, asking for permission and guidance before the ceremony begins.
After receiving approval, the ritual moved to the fields 🌴

The shaman chanted softly while offering rice and palm liquor to the earth goddess.
Villagers then gathered in a circle, sharing drinks, followed by dancing and singing
a beautiful expression of gratitude for the harvest!

オディシャ州（オリッサ州）の山間部に暮らす部族、ランジア・ソウラ族のレジンタル村を訪れました！

祖先の精霊を信仰する彼らのもとで、シャーマンが精霊と交信する儀式を見学。
儀式を行ってよいか、どのようなお供えが必要かを精霊に問いかけます。
やがてお許しが下り、今回は畑で儀式を行うよう告げられたようです🌴

シャーマンは再び祈りを唱え、火を灯したランプを手に、米を混ぜながら低く歌うように詠唱。
サゴヤシから造った酒を大地の女神へ捧げ、村の人たちは輪になって酒を飲んだ後、収穫への感謝と喜びを表す踊りと歌を捧げます。

Happy Rama Navami✨ Celebrating the birth of Lord Rama today!
It falls on the 9th day of the month of Chaitra, the first month of the traditional Hindu calendar.
📷 These photos are from the Vittala Temple in Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The carvings are found in the temple’s “wedding hall” not for humans, but for the ceremonial weddings of the gods🌹

チャイトラ月（インドの旧暦の1月）の9日目にあたる日です。

📷 Kandanar Kelan Vellattam (Theyyam) / Kerala
Here is a report from the ritual festival of Theyyam, a sacred tradition still practiced in northern Kerala! ✨

Kandanar Kelan Vellattam is one of the most popular Theyyam performances among the many deities and forms of Theyyam.

The performer (Theyyakkaran) in this ritual is especially noteworthy, 25 years old, known for his powerful and dynamic performance.
Because of this, he has gained significant popularity, attracting photographers not only from across Kerala but also from other states! 🔥

ケララ州北部に今も受け継がれる神事テイヤム（Theyyam）のお祭りレポートです！✨

📷 Elladath Chamundi – a deity of Theyyam / Kerala
This year also, here’s another glimpse from the Theyyam festival in northern Kerala, a ritual tradition that still continues today ✨

The exact origins of Theyyam are unclear, but it is believed to date back 2,000 to 3,000 years.
Originally rooted in local indigenous beliefs, it gradually became intertwined with the Hindu world over centuries.

The deity in the photo is Elladath Chamundi.
She is a goddess often identified with Parvati, the consort of Shiva.

In northern Kerala alone, there are said to be 300–400 different Theyyam deities, and sometimes the same deity is known by different names depending on the region.

📷 テイヤムの神様「エッラダトゥ・チャムンディ」／ケララ州

今年も、ケララ州北部に今も受け継がれる神事テイヤム（Theyyam）のお祭りレポートです！✨

テイヤムの起源ははっきりしていませんが、2000〜3000年前まで遡るともいわれる古い信仰です。
もともとはこの地域の土着信仰ですが、長い歴史の中でヒンドゥーの神々とも結びつきながら受け継がれてきました。

写真は Elladath Chamundi（エッラダトゥ・チャムンディ）。
女神で、シヴァ神の妻パールヴァティと同一視される存在とも言われています。
ケララ北部には 300〜400以上のテイヤムの神々があるとされ、同じ神でも地域によって名前が変わることもあるそうです。

A South Indian meals plate is always such a feast for the eyes!🍽️

In India, a set meal is often called either a thali or a meals.
Generally speaking, it’s thali in North India and meals in the South.

Sometimes the dishes are served in small bowls (katori), but in South India they’re often arranged directly on a banana leaf, which is naturally antibacterial and water-resistant 🍃🌴🍌

This Karnataka-style meals included roti with butter, methi (fenugreek leaves), cucumber, red onion, jhunka bhakri (a steamed chickpea flour dish), papad,
kosambari (a fresh lentil salad), raita, curries with eggplant, beans, and greens, plus yogurt and spiced buttermilk...✨🤤

カルナータカ州マイソールの食堂でいただいたミールスです🌴

インドの一皿定食は「ターリー」と「ミールス」という呼び方がありますが、
ざっくり言うと北インドではターリー、南インドではミールス。

おかずは小皿（カトリ）に盛られることもありますが、
南インドでは抗菌作用・耐水性があるといわれるバナナの葉に料理を並べて出されることもよくあります🍃🌴🍌

この日のミールスは、
ロティ（バター付き）、メティ（フェヌグリークの葉）、きゅうり、赤玉ねぎ、ジュンカ・バクリ（ひよこ豆の粉を蒸し固めた料理）、パパド、コサンバリ（生豆のサラダ）、ライタ、ナスや豆、青菜のカレーにヨーグルト、スパイス入りバターミルク…
見た目も楽しい、カルナータカらしいミールスです♪

📍 Block Printing in Kutch / Gujarat
Block printing is a traditional technique where patterns are stamped onto fabric one by one using carved wooden blocks.

One of the best-known styles from this region is Ajrakh, famous for its indigo-based patterns.
The same design appears on both sides of the cloth, originally made for shepherds 🐑 so it could be worn either way while they worked before sunrise.

During the dyeing process, fabrics are boiled with alizarin (madder root) to create a vivid red color.
Nearby, black dye is prepared by fermenting iron scraps, chickpeas, and jaggery (cane sugar) 🎨

📍 カッチ地方のブロックプリント／グジャラート州
チーク材の木版を使い、布に一つずつ模様を押していく伝統技法ブロックプリント。
この地域で特に知られるのが、インディゴを基調としたアジュラク染めです。
両面に同じ柄を染め上げる高度な技術が特徴で、もともとは羊飼いたちの衣服として作られていました🐑
暗いうちから働く彼らが裏表どちらでも着られるよう、両面プリントが施されているのだそうです。

ひきつづき、1月に訪れたツアー写真より📷
染色の工程では、アリザリン（西洋アカネの根）を入れて高温で煮ることで、鮮やかな赤色が生まれます。
天日干しをしているそばには、黒い染料を作るための容器が。
鉄くず・ひよこ豆・ジャグリー（サトウキビの砂糖）を入れてじっくり発酵させているところです🎨

Happy Holi! 🥳✨

Holi, the vibrant festival of colors, is celebrated across India as a joyful welcome to spring.
While it is often associated with prayers for prosperity and the cleansing of past misfortunes, its origins are also linked to the legend of Krishna and his beloved Radha.

📷 The photos were taken during our recent Gujarat tour at the Swaminarayan Temple in Ahmedabad.
Watching devotees bow deeply in prayer or quietly chant mantras created a calm and beautiful atmosphere.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Holi filled with color and happiness 🙏💖

ハッピーホーリー！🥳✨
色粉をかけ合うことで知られる、春のお祭りホーリー。
豊穣祈願や厄祓いなど諸説ありますが、ヴィシュヌ神の8番目の化身であるクリシュナ神と、その恋人ラーダーにまつわる伝説が起源といわれています。

写真は先日グジャラートのツアーで訪れた、アーメダバードのスワミナラヤン寺院。
地面にひれ伏して祈る姿や、穏やかにマントラを唱えて祈る人々の眼差しが美しかったです。
