📷 Sand Mandala / Ladakh, India
A beautiful yet fleeting art of Tibetan Buddhism in the Indian Himalayas.
The first two photos were taken at Thiksey Gompa, during our tour this August, where Tibetan Buddhist monks were carefully creating an intricate sand mandala with fine colored sand.
The third photo was taken at Korzok Gompa, during our July tour.
Here, we witnessed a completed sand mandala being swept away by a monk.

After days of careful work, the mandala is swept away at the end of the ritual, reflecting the Buddhist teaching of impermanence: nothing lasts forever.

📷 チベット仏教の砂曼荼羅／ラダック

ジュレー！西遊インディアです😊
インドのラダックで出会った、チベット仏教の砂曼荼羅。
チベット仏教において、仏や神々の世界を表す宗教芸術で、細かな色砂を少しずつ落としながら、緻密な文様を描き上げていきます。

1・2枚目は、今年8月のラダックツアーで訪れたティクセ・ゴンパ。僧侶たちが砂曼荼羅を制作しているところです。
そして3枚目は、7月のスピティ谷・ラダックツアーで訪れたコルゾック・ゴンパ。完成した砂曼荼羅を僧侶が崩している場面です。

何日もかけて緻密に描かれた曼荼羅も、お祭りや法要の後には壊されていきます。
そこには、すべてのものは移ろいゆくという仏教の「無常」の教えが込められています。

📷 Dhankar Gompa / Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Perched dramatically on a cliff at around 3,900m in Himachal Pradesh, Dhankar Gompa was one of the highlights of our journey through Spiti Valley and Ladakh in the Indian Himalayas this July!

Overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, this ancient monastery belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

The name “Dhankar” means “fort on a cliff.”
The area is also considered a special sacred place, with the surrounding mountains envisioned as the eight petals of a lotus and Dhankar at its very center🪷

Its unique silhouette rising from the stark landscape of Spiti is a sight you won’t easily forget!🏔️

📷 ダンカル・ゴンパ／スピティ谷

ジュレー！西遊インディアです😊

ヒマーチャル・プラデーシュ州、標高約3,900mの断崖に建つダンカル・ゴンパ（僧院）。
7月のインド・ヒマラヤ、スピティ谷とラダックを巡るツアーにて訪れました。

スピティ川とピン川の合流地点を見下ろすチベット仏教（ゲルク派）の古刹で、「ダンカル」とは“断崖の砦”を意味する言葉。
この地は、周囲の山々を蓮の八枚の花弁に見立てたとき、その中心に位置する特別な聖地とも考えられてきました🪷

荒涼としたスピティの大地に佇む個性的な姿は、一度見たら忘れられません！

📷 Sarnath – India's 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site / Uttar Pradesh

In July 2026, Sarnath was inscribed as India's 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site!🎉
Sarnath is the sacred place where the Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment.

📍1: Dhamek Stupa
📍2: Relief depicting scenes from the Buddha's life
📍3: The famous seated Buddha in the Teaching Gesture (Dharmachakra Mudra)
📍4: The Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's National Emblem

A place where history, art, and faith come together.
Congratulations, Sarnath! 😊

㊗インド45件目の世界遺産「サールナート」／ウッタル・プラデーシュ州㊗

ナマステ！西遊インディアです🙏
2026年7月、サールナートがユネスコ世界遺産に登録され、インド45件目の世界遺産となりました！🎉

サールナートは、ブッダが悟りを開いた後、初めて教えを説いた「初転法輪」の地。世界中の仏教徒にとって最も大切な聖地のひとつです。
写真1枚目は、6世紀に再建された巨大なダメーク・ストゥーパ。多くの巡礼者が訪れます。
2・3枚目はサールナート考古学博物館の所蔵。
仏伝図には、ブッダの誕生から初説法、涅槃まで、生涯の重要な場面が刻まれています。
初転法輪仏陀坐像は、衣の襞を表現しない5世紀のグプタ朝美術を代表する傑作として知られています。
4枚目は、インドの国章にも採用されているアショーカ王柱頭。
四頭の獅子と法輪は、現在のインド共和国のシンボルとしても親しまれています。

世界遺産登録を機に、さらに多くの人にその魅力が伝わることを願っています！😊

What a magical evening! ✨

📷 Onkadelli Thursday Market / Odisha

We visited the Thursday market of Onkadelli to meet the Bonda people, an indigenous community living in the hills of southern Odisha.

Known for their striking appearance, Bonda women wear layers of colorful bead necklaces, heavy metal rings around the neck, large earrings, and vibrant headwraps.

The market gathers several tribal communities from the surrounding hills and is full of daily scenes, accessories, food, fish, and handmade goods being traded.

We had a chance to try homemade liquor called domuni, brewed from millet in a dried gourd cup.
A glimpse into everyday life in the hills of Odisha ☺️💛

📷 アンカデリの木曜市で出会ったボンダ族／オディシャ州
ナマステ！西遊インディアです🙏
オディシャ州南部の山あいに暮らすボンダ族に会いに、アンカデリの木曜市へ。
鮮やかなビーズの首飾り、首に重ねた金属製の輪、大きな耳飾りにカラフルな頭飾り。ボンダ族の女性たちの装いはひときわ目を引きます。今も日常の中に息づく伝統的なスタイルが印象的です。
市場には周辺の部族も集まり、アクセサリーや魚、日用品などが並び、とてもにぎやか。
訪問時には、粟から造る自家製酒「ドゥムニ」を瓢箪の器でふるまう小さな集まりにも参加。オディシャの山岳地帯に暮らす人々の日常にふれる時間となりました☺️💛

Exploring Mithila Art in the Village, Madhubani, Bihar
A village in Madhubani, Bihar, visited during our Sonepur Mela tour🎨

In the second photo, the figure painted on the wall is Goddess Durga.
She is a fierce form of Parvati, the wife of Shiva, appearing as a warrior goddess. Riding a lion (or tiger), she is shown with ten arms, holding symbolic objects such as a spear, discus, and conch shell🐚✨

📍 ミティラー画の村（ビハール州マドゥバニ）

先日の投稿にひきつづき、ソンプールメーラのツアーで訪れたビハール州マドゥバニの村。
写真２枚目、壁に描かれているのは女神ドゥルガー。
シヴァ神の奥さんパールヴァティの化身で、獅子（または虎）の背にまたがり、戦う姿として描かれます。
10本の腕をもち、槍や円盤、法螺貝などを手にしています🐚

📷 Banana Market
📍 Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Vanakkam! During our Golden Week tour in South India, we stopped by the banana market in Madurai 🚶‍♀️

Although it’s mainly a wholesale market, visitors can also buy bananas there if they ask.
In India, not only the fruit but also the banana stems and flowers are sold and used in cooking 🌴

That day, we bought some small local bananas and red bananas recommended by our guide and gave them a try 🍌
Both were rich, sweet, and delicious ! We had a fun glimpse into everyday market life in South India!☺

GWの南インドのツアーにて、マドゥライのバナナ・マーケットに立ち寄りました🚶‍♀️

いわゆる卸売り市場ですが、その場でお願いすると観光客でも購入することができます。
ちなみに、バナナは茎や花も全て無駄なく売られています🌴

この日は、ガイドさんおすすめの小ぶりなバナナと赤バナナを買って味見🍌
どちらもほどよく甘くて濃厚！南インドらしい市場の散策をお楽しみいただきました☺

Julley Julley!🤚

We visited villages in search of apricot blossoms🌸
Turning prayer wheels, meeting an elderly local man and the “Aryan” people of Dha village, we were surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of spring in Ladakh😊

📷 Chattikona Wednesday Market / Odisha

We visited the Chattikona Wednesday market to meet the Dongria Kondh, who live in the hills of the Niyamgiri range in southern Odisha.

The name “Dongria Kondh” means “Kondh people of the forest,” and they hold the Niyamgiri hills sacred as a “mother mountain” where their deity resides.
As visitors are not allowed to enter their villages, opportunities to meet them are limited.
Their distinctive style—white cloth wrapped around the waist, nose rings and necklaces—is striking.
Many women also wear hairpins and even small knives tucked into their hair.

The market is lively, with stalls selling accessories, daily goods, and fish.
Among them, the small metal crafts known as Dokra, made using the lost-wax casting technique, stand out for their warm, handmade character☺️💛

ナマステ！西遊インディアです🙏
オディシャ州南部、ニヤマギリの山あいに暮らすドングリア・コンド族に会いに、チャティコナの水曜市へ。
ドングリア・コンドは「森に住むコンド」という意味を持ち、ニヤマギリの山を神が宿る“母なる山”として大切にして暮らしています。
外国人が村に立ち入ることは許されないため、彼らに会うチャンスは限られています。

白い布を腰に巻いた独特の装いに、鼻輪や首飾り。髪にはヘアピンや小さなナイフを差し込むスタイルも独特です。
市場にはアクセサリーや日用品、魚などが並び、とてもにぎやか。ロストワックス法（ロウを利用した鋳造）で作られるドクラの小さな金属工芸品は、手仕事の温もりを感じます☺️💛
