Leaving Tokyo, we drove towards Fuji and were delighted to have a view of Mount Fuji. We then visited the amazing Itchiku Kubota Art Museum. Near Lake Kawaguchi this museum was built in 1994 to house the wonderful dyed, painted and stitched kimonos of renowned textile artist, Itchiku Kubota. Such intricate work. Sadly we couldn't take photos but here are a couple of images from the catalogue. The building's architecture is inspired by Gaudi.

By Lake Kawaguchiko is the Muse Museum, housing the work of doll maker - Atae Yuki.
An area known for growing lavender, the ice cream was delicious.

Okaya Silk Museum is one of only 4 reeling companies in Japan and we were honoured to be guided around the museum by the company director. It is fascinating to see how technology has developed over 2000 years, and to explore the wide range of artifacts, machinery and tools.

We also visited the Koiwai weaving studio., dedicated to the traditional art of handloom weaving. The village was a thriving area for silk production, cultivating the silkworms in the top floors of the buildings with plenty of air circulation. Cats were kept to stop the rats from eating the silkworms, but now the village has a low population and the silk fibre is produced elsewhere. Beautifully woven silk for kimonos and scarves. Copper was also being woven into cloth.

We are working on a stitch project for everyone to enjoy as we travel. A great way to record memories of the trip, and create Japanese Knot Bags, decorated with Sashiko patterns.
Sashiko developed in Japan as a mending and reinforcing technique for textiles used for work clothes, so it had to be hard wearing. It is now used as a beautiful, decorative artform and can embellished all kinds of items. Some of the group are creating journey scrolls as well. A great way to chat and stitch in the evenings and on long journeys.
